Stora Enso adds SFI and PEFC chain-of-custody mill certifications

Press release from the issuing company

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis., May 22, 2007 – Stora Enso today announced that six of its North American mills have achieved third-party chain-of-custody certifications for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes (BV-COC-209961). Stora Enso is the first coated paper manufacturer in North America to achieve SFI Chain-of-Custody certification. The joint SFI and PEFC certification complements the Forest Stewardship Council© (FSC) Chain-of-Custody (SW-COC-1720 and SW-COC-1930) certifications Stora Enso announced last year. “These achievements clearly support Stora Enso’s objectives to promote forest certification and its commitment to sustainable forest management,” said Fred Souba, Jr., vice president, Wood Supply U.S. & Fiber. “We believe multiple certifications incorporate the best of all systems, and we appreciate that SFI and PEFC mutually recognize each other’s certifying standards.” Gordy Mouw, environmental manager of Stora Enso Wood Supply U.S., serves as the primary contact for the certification. According to Mouw, “Our customers, who require assurance that products are made with fiber from responsibly managed forests, have increased choices with the three certification systems we now have in place. Stora Enso plans to announce the additional certified products in the very near future.” William Banzhaf, president of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc., said, “We commend Stora Enso for this significant accomplishment. SFI Chain-of-Custody certification clearly demonstrates their strong commitment to responsible environmental practices.” Chain-of-custody is a third-party certified system that documents the path taken by wood from the forest to the mill, through to the customer. The standards of SFI and PEFC provide assurance to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting sustainable forest management. The Stora Enso North American mills that have achieved the additional SFI and PEFC chain-of-custody certifications include: Biron, Kimberly, Niagara, Whiting and Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; and Duluth, Minnesota. The audit for both certifications was conducted by Bureau Veritas, a widely recognized certification body.
