David Gill, managing director at the Stratford-based printer, signed for the company's second installation of KBA's mammoth four-color litho press on December 05. Capital's latest investment comes as it prepares to move out of its Marshgate Lane premises, which falls within the London 2012 Olympic park, by July 2007. It also comes after a rush in the past two years towards super-large-format litho, following the launches of KBA's Rapida 205 (format 1800 x 2050 mm) and MAN Roland's 900XXL (format 1300 x 1850 mm). The four-color press with additional coating and drying units for conventional or UV printing and varnishing will be installed at Capi-tal's new site in Beckton, ready for commissioning in March next year, and will go into full production in June. The firm's existing Rapida 205, which was installed early last year, will follow it and be commissioned next August. Gill said that the investment, the value of which has not been re-vealed, would ensure continuity for customers. "We have two of every other machine, so it makes sense to have two Rapida 205s. We're very focused on our customers and this will help avoid dis-ruption and make the transfer seamless." He added that once both machines were up and running, the company would continue to move work to the litho side of the business. Capital's £12m move to the new factory, which is close to City Air-port in Beckton, is being funded by the London Development Agency, which undertook to relocate all businesses on the 500-acre Olympic site at a cost of around £1.1bn. When the move was announced in July this year, the LDA also agreed £4.4m of funding to help pay for costs associated with the relocation. Although Capital is the first company in the UK to order two KBA Rapida 205 presses (elsewhere in the world only poster printer Ellerhold in Germany has two Rapida 205's and one Rapida 185) , there has been speculation that SP Group, the large-format arm of St Ives, is preparing to buy a second after unveiling its first ma-chine at an event last month. Worldwide almost 40 KBA Rapida super-large presses have been delivered or sold in the last three years. The main markets beside the UK are North America, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
