EFI Expands Environmental Initiatives, Delivers Eco-Friendly Solutions Worldwide

Press release from the issuing company

FOSTER CITY, Calif.--June 19, 2006-- EFI, the world leader in digital print servers, superwide format printers and inks, and print management solutions for commercial and enterprise printing, today announced new achievements supporting the company's long-held commitment to improving the environment and benefiting the company's global customers. Representing an unprecedented engineering development effort and manufacturing implementation, as of July 2006, EFI Fiery(R) digital print servers will ship as RoHS (Restriction of the use of Hazardous Substances)-compliant. EFI also recently announced its next-generation of environmentally-friendly solvent inks made with totally renewable resources, and with the upcoming summer peak season, its headquarters' innovative cooling system will be fully utilized for maximum energy efficiency. In accordance with its policy of advocating environmental health, EFI had been working to reformulate its products for many years before the European Parliament published its guidelines for lead, mercury, cadmium and other potentially hazardous substances. EFI's advance work dating back to 2002 has enabled the company to implement changes globally well in advance of RoHS compliance being compulsory for products shipped solely to Europe. Rather than retrofitting existing solutions, EFI proactively developed and launched completely new RoHS-compliant, environmentally sound Fiery hardware platforms: from the high-end Fiery Q5500 to mid-range Fiery S450/S650, to the lower-range Fiery X3TY2 and X3IM. With 14 million users worldwide, Fiery is the market-leading digital print server. "EFI constantly looks for ways to improve our product manufacturing and design, and our facilities, to minimize environmental impact while remaining cost-competitive," said Joseph Cutts, chief operating officer, EFI. "We're at the forefront of RoHS compliance and have revolutionized the industry by creating inks with totally renewable resources because these initiatives benefit the environment -- and our customers derive great benefits that contribute to their bottom line. Additionally, with the cooling system implemented at headquarters, we're not only helping to preserve the environment -- EFI is also saving approximately half a million dollars per year." EFI delivering only RoHS-compliant solutions comes shortly after EFI launched VUTEk BioVu, the first solvent-based ink made from a renewable resource -- corn -- and the only ink recognized by the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). BioVu delivers all the benefits of traditional solvent inks without the compromises inherent in eco-solvent and aqueous inks. Other benefits to the environment and to EFI customers include: lower disposal costs since there are no hazardous materials; reduced odor on final printed materials; it is less bothersome than solvent to employees; and because there are no harmful VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions, OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) regulations are satisfied. BioVu inks are for use on VUTEk UltraVu(R) II 3360 solvent printer, and EFI plans to expand BioVu inks to its other VUTEk solvent models later in the year. This news comes as Silicon Valley enters its hottest time of the year, when energy use is at its peak to cool down office temperatures. PG&E, the combined natural gas and electric utility provider for northern and central California, has estimated that EFI's energy conservation measures save the equivalent of 783 kilowatts of energy per day, which is enough to power approximately 600 homes. EFI maximizes building energy system efficiency with VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) technology while minimizing energy consumption on HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning). EFI's 10-story 300,000 square foot headquarters is located in immediate proximity to the San Francisco Bay, and the company deploys a high-tech network of dampers and fans to import the naturally cool, clean air from the bay to maintain a comfortable workplace temperature. EFI also utilizes a programmable intelligent lighting control for the building to further conserve energy. In fact, EFI's headquarters is among the most energy-efficient buildings in California.
