MAN Roland's printnet selected by The New York Times

Press release from the issuing company

New York, NY — MAN Roland today announced that The New York Times Company has selected its printnet production management system to streamline advertising production operations for The New York Times and the Boston Globe. Detailed specification and planning are already underway at both properties. printnet Newspaper automates and networks all aspects of newspaper production, from ad entry to printing. It provides a complete end-to-end solution that speeds production and reduces costs in production. The New York Times Company will implement printnet with modules devoted to pagination, ad management and page layout. printnet will interface with SAP’s IS-Media Industry Solution (IS-Media) that is also used by the Times Company. By connecting printnet and SAP, the Times Company will benefit from a seamless workflow that integrates the ad order process with placement, layout and print production. This should enable its newspapers to respond more quickly and efficiently to changing advertiser demands and monitor ad flow even more effectively. The New York Times Company will also use printnet to help improve its edition planning process, to better organize its placement of filler ads, banners and slugs, and to provide standby ad management services. Another significant improvement will be implementation of a unified production network that will help standardize operations across departments and across newspapers. Markus Feldenkirchen, CEO of MAN Roland’s U.S. printnet organization, says printnet supports the Times's strategic approach. "Standardization and automation are key to managing costs and being competitive,” he explains. “The Times commitment to their advertisers' changing needs is reflected in their printnet decision. It’s a decision to excel in the advertising market." The New York Times newspaper has a weekday circulation of 1.1 million and a Sunday circulation of 1.7 million. The Boston Globe has a weekday circulation of 413,300 and a Sunday circulation of 646,400. The Company's Worcester Telegraph & Gazette, also a part of this initiative, has a weekday circulation of 99,200 and Sunday circulation of 115,100. “We’re proud that The New York Times Company selected printnet to streamline its complex operations,” says Vince Lapinski, COO of Web Operations at MAN Roland Inc. “Newspapers all over the world have discovered that printnet is the most effective way to integrate advertising and production functions to enhance both productivity and profitability.”
