Montreal, Canada, March 28, 2006 Ultimate Technographics Inc, the leading imposition software developer and the inventor of digital imposition, will be demonstrating at IPEX the conversion of data from printers MIS systems to imposition jobs through JDF. Ultimate will be demonstrating JDF from Graphisoft, Hiflex, CERN, EFI-Hagen and others showing how they can create imposition jobs in Impostrip. These jobs can be exported as JDF to a prepress workflow system like DALiM, which will also be demonstrated. All of this will be shown at the JDF Pavilion, Pod S, in Hall 20 of IPEX in Birmingham-England next week. “Mentally estimators must consider many of the parameters of an imposition job,” David Watson, Ultimate President and CEO says. “They have to decide the sheet size of the job, the number of pages in it, and the trim size of the pages, how the job will be folded and cut. Many estimators even fold up pieces of paper to help determine this. Printers who use MIS systems for estimation and production planning have to enter information about these many parameters. Through JDF this information can now be transmitted in an industry standard way to other phases of print production. One of the most important is imposition, where most decisions are implemented that affects the rest of the production chain.” The interesting thing with Impostrip is that since it is a client/server application, multiple clients could be used both in prepress and in estimating/production planning. Impostrip MIS Convert module is separated from Impostrip so that it can reside on the MIS system computer. The estimator or planner could import the MIS JDF and do the virtual folding, or more, and pass the job to prepress for completion. The trend in many companies today is towards combining these functions as production becomes more automated. All MIS systems do not generate the complete information but even the partial data can be a starting point for imposition and prepress. Even if some systems can generate "all the details" provided for in CIP$-Stripping Params, this is not "all the details" that are necessary to do all kinds of jobs. For Example the folding library is useful, but for only a limited range of jobs. It is too limited to address things as simple as proper placement of work and turns to proper support for multiple webs, slit webs, coming and going, sectioning, repeating booklets, etc. Although some jobs may be done with a straight JDF Stripping Params conversion, there still leaves the question of marks, color bars, alignment for punch controls, gripper margins, etc. Depending on the work a printer does and depending of the changes that need to be done to the imposition to accommodate a last minute quick make over, most cases will require the intermediate step of using an imposition program to complete the information in the MIS system to do a complete job. Impostrip MIS Convert was designed with this in mind. The concept is that it will take whatever details the system can provide, as the starting point for the completion of the job. The Convert module will produce an Impostrip job, with whatever useful details there are. For example if they only can provide number of pages, trim size, and sheet size, bindery method, (things they have to know to do an estimate) this is the beginning of the job. Impostrip MIS convert will import this and then Impostrip can be used to do the rest. If there is no folding information, the Origami feature can be used to do that. As the program can be used to add color bars, marks to complete the job, it can be exported as a new JDF to a workflow that takes a JDF job or it can be output as standard PDF or PostScript. Of course the template can be saved to be reused. It could also be associated to a hot folder so that the MIS system could route the job all the way through if it is a repeat job, or similar job. This approach allows for both manual editing of the MIS JDF instructions and automatic production when applicable.
