The New York Times Chooses Transcontinental to Expand Its Presence in Toronto

Press release from the issuing company

NEW YORK--Nov. 28, 2005-- The New York Times announced today that the printing of its national edition in Toronto, Ontario, began last night through a new agreement with Transcontinental Interweb Toronto, a specialized newspaper printing plant of printer and publisher Transcontinental Inc. The agreement will enable The Times to extend weekday home delivery to readers in the metropolitan Toronto area as well as better serve existing markets, including Buffalo and Rochester. "This new agreement with Transcontinental, our first print location outside the United States, underscores The Times's commitment to provide high-quality journalism to more readers in more markets throughout North America," said Marc Z. Kramer, senior vice president of circulation at The New York Times. "We are continuing to execute against our plan to increase circulation of our national edition," said Scott Heekin-Canedy, president and general manager of The New York Times. "The Times's arrangement with Transcontinental is one of several print-site expansions slated for the next two years." Francois Olivier, president of Transcontinental's Information Products Printing sector, said, "This promising 10-year partnership with The New York Times is further proof of the success of our unique newspaper printing model. We see newspaper print outsourcing as an irreversible trend, as it allows publishers to avoid significant capital expenditures in order to keep pace with printing's rapidly evolving technology. Combining the latest technology with a self-managed work force, our unique model allows publishers to concentrate on their strengths - content and product development - while we focus on ours - providing greater deadline flexibility, more colour capability and, ultimately, a superior-looking printed product." In addition to The New York Times, the Transcontinental Interweb Toronto production facility produces The Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper, which, like The New York Times, has been recognized for printing quality by being named to the elite International Newspaper Color Quality Club, an honor bestowed upon only 50 newspapers in the world.
