AB Allehanda, Ornskoldsvik upgrades with Goss Community towers and Europe’s first Goss N40 folder

Press release from the issuing company

Swedish newspaper publisher AB Allehanda, Örnsköldsvik, has placed an order for two new four-high Goss Community towers to extend its existing Goss press. As part of the package they have also ordered Europe’s first Goss Community N40 folder which will allow the publisher to produce an 88 page tabloid product. Originally having a Goss Community press with seven four-high towers installed at its facility in 2001, the publisher added two further towers in 2003 in order to cope with rising print demands. Now, the additional two towers in the latest package will allow AB Allehanda to run an incredible 11 webs at a speed of up to 30,000 copies per hour. Anders Kallstrom, Chief Executive of AB Allehanda, comments, “The major trends in the market currently point towards more pages as well as sectioning, typically two or three in addition to the main bulk of the newspaper. The new Goss N40 folder means we can keep abreast of these trends and even develop them further. For example, the new Goss N40 folder allows our special pink sports edition of Aftonbladet to be separated from the other sections printed in color on white paper.” Anders continues, “Other trends include a demand for more full color advertising space. Our ability to now print more color pages caters for this, and will doubtlessly attract new advertising business.” The purchase of the equipment has led AB Allehanda to modify its premises. Work is currently underway to lift the ceiling of the existing press hall to provide enough height for the new towers. The reel storage area is also being rebuilt in order to make room for this and a further possible tower extension in the future. The press is used to produce the company’s own newspaper Örnsköldsvik Allehanda (21,000 copies daily) as well as contract titles Tidningen Angermanland (27,000 copies six days a week) and national daily Aftonbladet, Sweden’s biggest selling tabloid. The publisher prints 75,000 copies of Aftonbladet daily, which are distributed all over northern Sweden. The new Goss Community N40 folder will allow AB Allehanda to print 88 tabloid pages per issue for Aftonbladet, with the potential to produce 96 pages per issue from a 12 tower press at a later date. The folder will also consist of three formers, which will allow production of three tabloid sections of varying sizes to be produced. The decision to invest in the Goss N40 folder was taken after Anders and his colleagues travelled to Vancouver, Canada, to see the very first Goss N40 folder in production. “We were very impressed indeed,” Anders comments. “The designer of the folder from Goss USA was on-hand to demonstrate the full benefits. This practical demonstration, seeing the equipment in use before our eyes, along with the trusted name of Goss, cemented our decision.” Indeed, it would seem that trust in the Goss brand played a pivotal role in this sale. Anders is certainly a happy Goss customer. “We see Goss as the original and best. From our experiences of operating Goss equipment over the past five years, I can honestly say that Goss has completely fulfilled, even exceeded, all our expectations. As our company continues to flourish, so too will our business relationship with Goss – of that I am sure.” Peter Selby, European Sales Director, Goss International concludes, “Each feature on the press at AB Allehanda has been specifically chosen for its flexibility, performance and its benefit to print quality. The unique solution that has been provided in this case will enable them to remain competitive in the Swedish market and will play a key role in the publisher’s future continued success.”
