Torraspapel Strengthens Its Commitment to Sustainable Development

Press release from the issuing company

(June 05, 2008) On June 5 each year, the United Nations celebrates World Environment Day with the aim of promoting environmental awareness and enhancing political attention and action. This year, the focus is on the importance of reducing green-house gas emissions to curb climate change, one of the great challenges of our time. With this goal, the slogan Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy has been chosen, to urge countries, companies and communities to foster initiatives that promote low-carbon lifestyles and economies, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and consuming eco-friendly consumption.

In this respect, Torraspapel, part of the Lecta Group, supports this initiative by contributing to disseminate the message and by means of specific actions addressed to reducing the environmental impact of its business activity. In the last two years, Torraspapel has reduced its specific CO2 emissions by 9%, to 0.4 tons of CO2 per ton produced. This significant decrease is the result of adopting various measures such as replacing fuel oil by natural gas, process improvement, adopting mill-specific energy-saving projects and giving priority to rail transport over road transport. Moreover, all Torraspapel's mills run controls on CO2 emissions and strive to improve energy efficiency in order to do as much as possible to reduce emissions, in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol, thus contributing to reducing the green-house effect.

In addition to reducing CO2 emissions in its business operations, Torraspapel contributes to maintaining and increasing woodland by using pulp originating from responsibly-managed forest plantations and by planting trees, which are highly efficient absorbers of CO2, by way of various reforestation projects and corporate volunteer days.
