Sappi supports social development with donations to 30 causes

Press release from the issuing company

September 22, 2005 -- Yesterday, Sappi Limited hosted representatives from 30 national and local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and public benefit organisations (PBOs) at its head office in Braamfontein and handed over donations totalling some R570, 000 in support of their programmes and activities. These donations form part of Sappi’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility programme of almost R20m in South Africa, which supports education, arts and culture, conservation, welfare, HIV/AIDS and health, and community and rural development. André Oberholzer, Group Head Corporate Affairs of Sappi Limited, commented during the function: “Sappi has a long and proud history of supporting social development and worthy causes in South Africa. It is our fundamental belief that good business practice includes support for the social and developmental aspirations of the societies and communities we operate in.” He concluded by saying “while we cannot help everyone who knocks on our door, we believe the donations we are making today are going to worthy organisations who have demonstrated their commitment to serving society’s many and diverse needs.”
