(Andover, Massachusetts) -- Standard Finishing Systems and Horizon International will demonstrate broad JDF capability and interoperability at Print 05, with two live JDF workflows organized in collaboration with six industry-leading partners, and over sixteen different solutions driven by the new JDF-ready i2i Bindery Control System. “Our goal is to show printers and trade binders how advanced digital control in the bindery can improve their bottom line” says Standard Finishing Systems Managing Director David Reny. “The Horizon i2i system brings post-press automation, productivity, and efficiency to any finishing environment, and it harnesses the full power of JDF across the bindery when customers are ready to implement a fully-integrated workflow.” The Standard Horizon Bindery Automation Theater will feature two live JDF print production workflows in cooperation with industry leaders EFI, Hiflex, Kodak, Komori, Ryobi, and Screen. Saddlestitching and perfect binding jobs will flow from creation to finishing in fully-integrated JDF-driven workflows, to show real-world interoperability, cost savings, and other benefits. When these jobs enter the bindery, they’ll be managed by the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System. In one workflow, the Hiflex MIS system will create a saddlestitching job and route JDF data to the Kodak Prinergy workflow management system for pre-press and to the Ryobi Smart Net color printing system and 750 series press. The JDF post press data will also be sent to the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System, where finishing parameters will be consumed. After being printed in the Ryobi booth, the job will be delivered to the Standard Horizon booth, where i2i will issue JDF job tickets for the APC-66D paper cutter and the StitchLiner 5500 sadlestitching system, for fully automated set-up in accordance with parameters in the JDF file. These finishers will report a range of production statistics in real time over a network to the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System, which will relay the data back to the Hiflex MIS system for closed-loop reporting and cross-enterprise visibility. The other live workflow will be a perfect bound job. The job specification will be entered on the EFI Hagen OA management system, and then sent via JDF to Komori's JDF-enabled workstation, K-Station. Screen Ritecontrol will create and submit the JDF file for press and post press. After printing on the Komori Lithrone 40SP, the sheets will be sent to the Standard Horizon booth, where the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System will consume the JDF post press data, calculate the necessary settings, and issue a JDF job ticket to convey the set-ups to the automated Horizon AFC-744 folder for signature folding, and the automated 9-clamp Horizon CABS4000 system for perfect binding and three-knife trimming. Real-time production data will be captured and reported to the Hagen OA management information system. The Horizon i2i Bindery Control System provides feature-rich bindery control, including bar-coded job tickets for automated machine set-up; the ability to save and recall recurring jobs; a job scheduling planner; and the capture of production statistics for accounting and analysis. Job status and work-in-progress on all i2i-connected machines can be monitored in real time from a central console for better-informed scheduling, staff planning, and equipment utilization. When i2i is integrated upstream, this data is also visible to customer service, estimating, production planning, and management. Legacy bindery equipment that is not i2i-networked can also be included, allowing cross-bindery data collection and a complete management window into bindery operations. Standard will also be a focal point for the CIP4-sponsored Post Press Interoperability Trail, which will direct visitors to leading graphic arts suppliers providing JDF-enabled solutions. Six of the eight trail stops will be active participants with Standard Horizon in live JDF workflows. In addition to the production workflows featured in the Bindery Automation Theater, the Horizon i2i system will be using JDF data to drive automated set-ups and capture production data on over sixteen different Standard Horizon folding, cutting, perfect binding, collating, bookletmaking, and saddlestitching solutions located throughout the Standard Horizon booth. Even without JDF control, these systems provide quick, accurate changeovers using advanced touchscreen operation and servomotor-control for end-to-end automated set-ups. Print 05 marks the largest-ever exhibit of Standard Horizon and Standard Hunkeler feeding and finishing solutions in North America, with over 8,000 square feet devoted to state-of-the-art solutions.
