1922 MAN Roland letterpress stars in exhibit celebrating "400 Years of Newspapers"

Press release from the issuing company

Mainz, Germany — The worldwide newspaper industry is celebrating its 400th birthday this year, and MAN Roland is joining in with an exhibit at the Gutenberg Museum titled: "Black on White: 400 Years of Newspapers. A Medium Makes History." An 83-year-old MAN Roland web letterpress is the star of the show. Once a week, it prints an eight-page newspaper that describes the anniversary exhibit and serves as a souvenir of the celebration. Built in 1922, the machine was extensively reconditioned by MAN Roland with support from the Scholpp company in Dietzenbach, Germany. "We invested some 1,000 man hours in the project,” reports Michael Gnädinger, head of Interior Assembly at MAN Roland in Augsburg. Up until the beginning of last year, when it retired, the press was printing the "Norderneyer Badezeitung" every day on the German North Sea island of Norderney. MAN Roland, the global leader in newspaper press manufacturing, got it back in top shape as a tribute to everyone who works in the newspaper industry worldwide. It can be seen running at the Gutenberg museum until the end of the year, when the exhibit closes.
