Parker Pad and Printing Uses NEXPRESS to Produce Award-Winning Digital Printing

Press release from the issuing company

ROCHESTER, N. Y., May 17, 2005 — NexPress Solutions, Inc., part of Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group, announced that Ontario, Canada-based Parker Pad and Printing has achieved considerable success following the upgrade installation of the new fifth imaging unit solution for its KODAK NEXPRESS 2100 digital production color press. In combination with the KODAK NEXGLOSSER glossing unit, Parker Pad has been able to increase the impact, durability and quality of a wide range of products – and win both industry awards and new business. Parker Pad and Printing, a third-generation printing company that has both a NEXPRESS 2100 press and a KODAK DIGIMASTER digital production system, is a full-service commercial printer. Through a combination of value-added digital printing capabilities, such as variable data printing, cost-effective short runs, accurate PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM (PMS) colors, and enhanced in-house bindery services, Parker Pad and Printing has grown its business from $2 million to $12 million over the last 10 years. With two KODAK digital printing systems, Parker Pad and Printing has produced more than 37 million digital prints in the last two years. The multi-award-winning company recently received an award from the Ontario Printing Industries Association (OPIA) that recognized the excellence of a countertop display promoting a DVD release, which was printed on the NEXPRESS 2100 press and finished with a lustrous glossy coat using the NEXGLOSSER glossing unit. “We’re very pleased with the output of our five-color NEXPRESS 2100 press – especially the glossing capability,” said Janis Parker, president. “Not only can we protect and improve the overall look of whatever we print, the system is also capable of printing on multiple substrates, including heavy card stock and pressure-sensitive materials. This gives us great flexibility to meet customer needs.” Parker Pad and Printing was Canada’s first company to upgrade its NEXPRESS 2100 press to the new model with the KODAK NEXPRESS fifth imaging unit solution and NEXGLOSSER glossing unit. Parker Pad is already making profitable use of their new system using three high-value capabilities: KODAK NEXPRESS intelligent color, intelligent coating and intelligent glossing solutions. For example, the intelligent glossing solution is being used to produce durable, high-gloss tabs on divider pages for binders. Previously, the company would print the tabs on an offset press and then send the tabs out for lamination and die cutting. With the fifth imaging unit solution, Parker Pad can keep the job entirely in-house. By printing the tabs on heavy stock on the NEXPRESS 2100 press, and using the NEXGLOSSER glossing unit to add gloss protection prior to die cutting, the overall production cost has been significantly reduced. The true registration of the 2100 ensures accuracy in die cutting and improves the overall quality attainable with the 2100 compared to previous digital systems. In another example, a banking customer’s logo requires a highly accurate color match to maintain corporate standards. Using the NEXPRESS intelligent color solution, with colors licensed from Pantone, Inc., Parker Pad and Printing achieves a 98 percent accurate match. The intelligent color solution enables printers to deliver an 80 percent richer color gamut than can be achieved with standard four-color process printing, providing a significant enhancement to spot color reproduction. This solution builds on the range of colors currently achievable on the NEXPRESS 2100 press, which already delivers a 20 percent richer color gamut than four-color offset. This high degree of color fidelity is often used as a selling point when the company pitches new business. Parker Pad and Printing uses the NEXPRESS intelligent coating solution with the NEXGLOSSER glossing unit to add more cost-effective, high-impact gloss coverage to postcards, point-of-purchase displays, card stock and even offset-printed materials. By printing on offset with waxless ink and then applying a coat of NEXPRESS clear dry ink to the sheets, the NEXGLOSSER glossing unit serves as an efficient, offline glossing system that adds even more value to printed documents.
