Digital Success at Padgett Printing Leads to Purchase of Second KODAK NEXPRESS 2100 Press

Press release from the issuing company

ROCHESTER, N. Y., May 17, 2005 — NexPress Solutions, Inc., part of Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group, today announced that Padgett Printing has installed its second KODAK NEXPRESS 2100 digital production color press featuring the new fifth imaging unit, in response to growing demand. Padgett Printing, a family-owned business located in Dallas, Texas, was one of the industry’s first commercial printers to adopt digital printing technology in 1998. Today, the company has a thriving and profitable commercial printing operation, serving top consumer retailers, utilities and financial services companies. In 2004, Padgett grew its digital printing business by 35 percent and also experienced gains in offset printing revenues from new digital customers. Padgett expects its digital printing growth to be more than double the overall company growth in 2005. “Our business will be dramatically changing in the next three to five years,” said David Torok, President and CEO of Padgett Printing. “We will be less dependent on ink on paper and more dependent on digital print services and post-print opportunities. We are selling solutions to our customers and as they realize growth and healthy profit margins from successful marketing campaigns, we also reap the benefits.” Torok attributes much of Padgett’s success to Kodak’s post-sales business development tools and support, as well as with the output quality of the systems, powerful variable data printing software and lowest cost per piece. Padgett Printing’s capacity and turn-around time are important, but the ability to do advanced variable data printing for national clients is critical to the value it offers. After installing its first NEXPRESS 2100 press in Q1 2004, the company added a second in Q1 2005. In addition to these two presses, Padgett also relies on one KODAK DIGIMASTER 9150i and two KODAK DIGIMASTER 9110 digital production systems. With these high-capacity systems in place, Padgett can meet even the most pressing client deadlines — and today is able to produce more than 500,000 pieces per day. “We could afford the technology,” continued Torok. “What we really needed was the expertise to make it successful. Kodak has partnered with us on every level, including consistent support and training for our sales force. In fact, our purchase decision was based in part on the high degree of post-sales support NexPress offers. Our analysis shows that the business development manager was involved in 90 percent of the business we gained in the last year. The entire relationship has been very positive and productive for us.” Kodak’s business development manager has helped Padgett grow its average sales per employee to $240,000 (compared to the industry average of $120,000) by focusing on establishing a solid foundation of ongoing variable data printing campaigns. Today, Padgett closes over 90 percent of digital printing sales leads, thanks to this on-site post-sales support. Padgett also utilized Kodak’s comprehensive Business Development Toolkit, including collaborative sales and marketing strategy, sales education, in-depth information on vertical markets, variable data printing application development, and more. The result has been a solid return on investment for Padgett’s first NEXPRESS 2100 press and the subsequent installation of a second system. As an early adopter of leading-edge technology, both of Padgett’s NEXPRESS 2100 presses are equipped with the new KODAK NEXPRESS fifth imaging unit solution. The fifth imaging unit solution enables three high-value capabilities: KODAK NEXPRESS intelligent color, intelligent coating and intelligent glossing solutions. The special gloss finish is achieved with KODAK NEXPRESS clear dry ink, in combination with the new KODAK NEXGLOSSER glossing unit. Padgett is one of the first printers in the country to operate two of these systems to bring added capabilities, such as a high-impact gloss finish to postcards and other mailers.
