SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department has appointed Xiaohong Wang of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology as a research professor. Wang arrived at Cal Poly in January and will participate in teaching and research activities through at least the summer. At the University of Shanghai, Wang is an associate professor of digital prepress and printing technology. "I came to Cal Poly because of its very famous program in graphic communication," Wang said. "My goal is to learn more about the technologies of the graphic communication industry, especially in the field of electronic prepress and flexography. Also, I would like to have a deeper understanding of what constitutes a solid bachelor's degree education in graphic communication in the United States. I look forward to meeting some of the American printing-industry experts who have influenced the development of graphic communication worldwide." Penny Osmond, a Cal Poly professor in the areas of prepress, digital imaging, variable data printing, and packaging, is serving as mentor to Wang. "It has been a pleasure to have Professor Wang work with us at Cal Poly. She has brought a great deal of information regarding the international culture of printing to our students. It is crucial for our students to understand the trends both nationally and internationally in our industry," Osmond said. "Cal Poly recognizes that China is going to play a crucial role in the future of the graphic communication industry, particularly in the areas of the manufacture of consumables for American companies, and it is important to establish alliances that will help develop cooperative efforts," said Harvey Levenson, head of the Graphic Communication Department at Cal Poly. "Learning about the Chinese graphic communication culture, and the capabilities of China in furthering the growth and development of graphic communication worldwide, is imperative for our students and faculty. We also hope to provide Professor Wang with a perspective on the industry that will help China grow in its graphic communication capabilities in a way that supports American printers and manufacturers, as well as the Chinese printing industry." Wang is the author of a book on anti-counterfeiting techniques. She has also published approximately 30 articles on printing technology, prepress technology, and packaging printing. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in graphic communication, a master's degree in signal and information processing, and a Ph.D. in textile material.
