Jones Printing Enters Digital Printing Market with Xerox iGen3 Press

Press release from the issuing company

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. & ROCHESTER, N.Y.--Jan. 18, 2005-- Jones Printing Company is entering the digital printing business by installing its first digital product - a Xerox iGen3 Digital Production Press. According to the commercial printer, the 100 page-per-minute iGen3 press, the first in Tennessee, will help meet changing customer demands and complement its traditional focus on offset printing. "Several years ago I saw that the printing business was changing and there was an eroding market for offset printing," said Wendell Burns, president, Jones Printing. "We needed to adapt to customers wanting shorter print runs, quick turnaround and personalization - capabilities that weren't possible on offset equipment and where the iGen3 press excels." Jones Printing will use the iGen3 press to become a full-service provider, transition short-run jobs from offset to digital, and keep in-house digital work it had been outsourcing. "We had one customer that needed a last-minute job for a trade show. With the iGen3 press, we were able to print that same day a short-run of 2,000 and later produce a longer run on our offset press," said Burns. "The customer was very pleased with our ability to help them, and they were amazed with the image quality of the digital press." Jones Printing will produce a range of full-color applications on the digital press, including brochures, CD sleeves for music and software, menus, and restaurant signage. A large portion of what the iGen3 press will produce will be personalized documents -- where content and images vary from page to page -- such as direct mail and postcards, newsletters, and even magazines, where the company has a possible opportunity to print a high-volume publication with a personalized cover. "When the National Do Not Call Registry was enacted, businesses needed a different way to reach consumers. Unlike phone calls, I don't believe people are offended with a personalized direct mail piece," said Burns. "One-to-one marketing will make digital short-run, print on demand hot." According to Burns, the company chose the Xerox iGen3 press because of its breakthrough speed, image quality, flexibility to print larger and heavier paper, digital workflow, and Xerox's customer service and support. To ensure a quick start-up, Xerox deployed a SmartPress Production Consultant, as part of its customer business development team, to work on-site and help Jones Printing take full advantage of the iGen3 press' revenue-generating capabilities. Jones Printing Company, founded in 1947, is a full-service commercial sheet-fed printer. In addition to offset and digital printing, the company offers prepress services, a full bindery and fulfillment. The company, with 46 employees, is a member of the Nationwide Graphics Premier-Print organization, and it is among the few commercial printers to be ISO 9001 certified.
