NexPress Demonstrates Fifth Imaging Unit Capabilities At Graph Expo

Press release from the issuing company

ROCHESTER, N.Y., October 10, 2004 – NexPress Solutions, Inc., a Kodak company, demonstrated the capabilities of the unique fifth imaging unit for the KODAK NEXPRESS 2100 digital production color press at the Graph Expo trade show in Chicago, October 10-13, booth #1697. NexPress launched the fifth imaging unit for the NEXPRESS 2100 press at drupa 2004 in May. The system is licensed by Pantone, Inc. and consists of three key components: intelligent color, coating and glossing solutions. NexPress will demonstrate the intelligent glossing solution for the first time in the United States at Graph Expo. A number of early customers are already finding that the capabilities of the NEXPRESS 2100 press combined with the fifth imaging unit solution improves the quality of their product, and their workflow as well. For example, Bates Jackson, a 101-year-old printer in Buffalo, New York, has embraced the NEXPRESS 2100 press as a platform for its rapidly growing digital business. Owner E.J. Flammer reports excellent results with the fifth imaging unit. “The versatility of the press with the fifth imaging unit is a high point. We can both expand the color gamut with three different colors of new dry ink, and we also can have a clear coat which saves production time in finishing,” Flammer said. “So instead of having to go to offline coating or lamination, the pieces can come off the press and go right to the cutter.” Bob Radzis of RT Associates, a digital service provider located in suburban Chicago, has appreciated the exceptional quality of the NEXPRESS 2100 press since adopting it as the digital color print engine for RT’s business three years ago. The company recently completed a month where they ran more than 3 million impressions on the 2100 with no mechanical downtime. RT Associates has been using the fifth imaging unit and is impressed with the results. “The color that is produced out of the NEXPRESS 2100 press is outstanding, even rivaling the quality of our offset press at times and sometimes even exceeding the offset press, depending on the stock,” said Bob Radzis, CEO of RT Associates. RT Associates has created a number of “automated marketing” programs for its clients using a web-to-print application with the NEXPRESS 2100 press. The system allows clients to create, specify and order customized, variable data materials printed with the 2100; RT Associates then sends the mailers directly to their customers. “Now that we’ve incorporated the fifth imaging unit, the glossing makes the pieces look better and the coating protects the direct mail from wear and tear. With a smoother process and workflow, it’s all going much better from our standpoint, and that of the customer.” Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions The KODAK NEXPRESS intelligent coating solution lets users add NEXPRESS clear dry ink coating for greater image protection and greater productivity. Users can add a flood or spot coating of the new clear dry ink, an additional protective layer for printed pieces and images. It also allows an overcoat as an authenticating watermark on coupons or to communicate copyrights on proofs of portrait images. The NEXPRESS intelligent color solution lets print businesses achieve a new dimension of color gamut unachievable through standard four-color process printing, enabling significant improvement in the reproduction of spot colors. Using the color solution, print providers can achieve an 80-percent richer color gamut than is possible with standard offset process printing. This solution builds on the range of colors currently achievable on the NEXPRESS 2100 press, which already delivers a 20-percent richer color gamut than four-color offset process printing. The NEXPRESS intelligent glossing solution enables print providers to add a high-gloss coating to printed pieces for higher marketing impact, and is a cost-effective and easy-to-use near-line offering that gives users enhanced image quality and productivity improvements. It features a clear dry ink coating and the new seamlessly integrated, near-line KODAK NEXGLOSSER glossing unit, which achieves higher gloss than UV-coating processes. NEXPRESS intelligent color and coating solutions are currently available. NexPress is demonstrating the NEXPRESS intelligent glossing solution at Graph Expo. The intelligent glossing solution will be available worldwide in the first quarter of 2005.
