Xerox Debuts Expanded Digital Portfolio

Press release from the issuing company

CHICAGO--Oct. 11, 2004-- Adding even greater power to its leading high-end digital printing portfolio, Xerox Corporation today unveiled an array of new offerings, announced new wide-format color printers, and demonstrated the world's fastest cut-sheet highlight color technology -- all designed to bring new revenue-generating opportunities to the printing industry. Xerox also launched new capabilities to bolster steadily growing print volumes on the Xerox iGen3 Digital Production Press, and showcased a 24/7 state-of-the-art "command center" that provides proactive remote customer support. Xerox debuted the new products, software and services at the massive Graph Expo printing exhibition as part of its strategy to accelerate growth and help customers leverage the power of personalized, on-demand printing in the graphic communications market. At Graph Expo, Xerox is demonstrating the industry's broadest digital portfolio in its 12,600 sq. ft. booth, with offerings designed to serve burgeoning demand for short-run book publishing and materials such as customized travel brochures and colorized invoices. The company is also expanding its FreeFlow(TM) Digital Workflow Collection, which streamlines the path jobs follow through the creation, production, distribution and administrative portions of the printing process. "A digital tide of change is transforming the printing industry. It is creating more efficient work processes and additional ways for print shops to generate revenue while giving print buyers more flexibility and better value than ever before," said Xerox Chairman and CEO Anne M. Mulcahy. "The right technology, combined with the right business model and the right workflow, can reposition the printing industry in ways we are only just beginning to discover." Some 3.4 billion production copy and digital print pages are produced in the U.S. every working day, according to InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, a Weymouth, Mass., industry research firm. InfoTrends/CAP Ventures forecasts that in 2004 the retail value of these digital pages represents a $43.5 billion market, which print providers can leverage to complement their offset business. Among the new technologies Xerox demonstrated at Graph Expo is the world's fastest cut-sheet highlight color printing system. Operating at 180 pages per minute -- nearly twice the previous Xerox benchmark speed of 92 ppm -- the Xerox 180 Highlight Color system is the fastest of three new highlight color products, the 180 HLC, the 155 HLC and the 128 HLC. Printing one color in addition to black, these products add value to newsletters, reports, invoices and statements by using color to focus reader attention on the most critical information. As an example, a Xerox customer collecting overdue payments found that letters printed with highlight color instead of black and white resulted in a 17 percent increase in the value of payments received. Xerox also unveiled a duo of color wide-format printers -- the 8160 and 8142 Wide Format Color Printers -- that are faster, easier to use and less expensive to operate than leading competitive products. Able to switch between inks for indoor and outdoor print jobs such as banners, posters, signs and point-of-purchase displays, they will produce extra large output from 42 to 60 inches wide. Service and Systems Innovations Xerox is boosting the productivity and reliability of its flagship 100 ppm iGen3 press with expanded remote customer support. An always-on "command center" now processes real-time, in-depth information about virtually every installed iGen3 press in North America. The result is fast, proactive communication on technical issues and job set-up and production -- day or night. Similar support is being deployed for the Xerox Nuvera(TM) Digital Production System and for future color and monochrome production devices. Xerox also showcased new feeding and finishing options that allow the iGen3 press to operate for extended periods of time and to produce a broader spectrum of printed pieces. With additional feeding enhancements, users can load as many as 12 different papers or up to 30,000 sheets of 80-lb. coated text paper. A new roll feed system, with up to 50,000 sheets of paper per roll, enables the press to run for several hours without interruption. New finishing options make sharper, cleaner folds on coated papers and trim sides for full-bleed color booklets at the rated speed of the iGen3 press. In addition, Xerox revealed that more than 30 customers have now printed 1 million pages or more on a single iGen3 press in a given month, running jobs as diverse as customized financial statements, travel itineraries and direct marketing campaigns. New Color Server For print shops and graphics-intensive offices, Xerox and Creo Inc. announced the new Spire(TM) CXP3535e color server for the Xerox DocuColor 3535, a 35 ppm color copier/printer system. The server, which processes and transmits images to the DocuColor 3535, features an easy to use interface with advanced capabilities for printing customized information that varies from page to page.
