The Deccan Chronicle of India increases capacity with new Goss Uniliner S press

Press release from the issuing company

9th September 2004 - Indian newspaper publishers Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd has placed an order with Goss International for a 10 unit shaftless Goss Uniliner ‘S’ press for one if its printing facilities in India. The Uniliner ‘S’ press will print up to 75,000 copies per hour and will be housed in a new building specially commissioned to accommodate the new equipment. Mr. Ramesh, Chief Engineer and General Manager of Maintenance at the Deccan Chronicle commented, “The Goss Uniliner ‘S’ press offers us much higher newspaper print quality than we are currently achieving as well as a more efficient production system allowing shorter deadlines and make-ready times. It will also provide us with tremendous capacity, more color pages and reduced wastage due to higher levels of automation.” The Goss Uniliner ‘S’ press system is dedicated to straight production and offers highly efficient printing. Cost-saving opportunities are available from the diminished use of plates and the resulting shortened make-ready times for both long and short print runs. Mr Ramesh continues, “As far as we are concerned, Goss International is the best known brand in newspaper printing systems and has the most reliable presses. Modern newspaper publishing is setting new challenges in terms of color quality, section numbers, mix of production size and total efficiency and we are convinced that the Uniliner ‘S’ press is the right choice to enable us to achieve our goals.” The 546mm/21.5” cut-off press includes two four-high towers and one two-high tower along with four reelstands and a 2:3:3 jaw folder for the production of Deccan Chronicle’s products. The units will also be specified with motorized inking, circumferential and lateral register controls and an automatic greasing system. Goss OPCS press controls complete the order. The Deccan Chronicle prints its namesake daily newspaper, The Deccan Chronicle, which has a current daily circulation of over 400,000 copies. Peter Kirwan, Goss Vice President of Sales, Asia Pacific said, “The Uniliner ‘S’ press is well suited to the Indian market as almost all presses run straight only. Because of this, Deccan Chronicle is well placed to take advantage of the substantial cost savings that accompany such a press. We are very proud to have been selected by such a prestigious company for its press expansion and hope that this will be the first of many in this exciting market place.”
