July 3, 2003 -- The Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) 2003 Conference, with the theme “Between Text & Reader”, will take place on September 25 through 28 in Vancouver, Canada. The Conference is being held in partnership with the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, one of Canada’s most important and prestigious art schools. This event is possible because of the generous sponsorship of Linotype Library, AgfaMonotype, Adobe Systems, and Microsoft, with more sponsors to be announced soon. Beginning Thursday evening September 25, the conference will open at the Westin Bayshore Resort & Marina. The keynote speaker is Canadian Robert Bringhurst, whose book The Elements of Typographic Style is a recognized classic in the field. Dr Ron Burnett, President of the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, will also speak. On Friday the conference will move at noon to the Emily Carr Institute on Granville Island for the rest of the program. Confirmed speakers include Roger Black, Erik Spiekermann, Gerard Unger, Doyald Young, Jean-François Porchez, Shelley Gruendler, Akira Kobayashi, Huda Schmitshuijzen AbiFarès, Kay Amert, Frank Blokland, Gerald Cinamon, Joe Clark, Jorge de Buen, Peter Enneson, Shelley Gruendler, John Hudson, Kent Lew, Martin Mendelsberg, Larry Oppenberg, Thomas Phinney, Jim Rimmer, Mamoun Sakkal, Nick Shinn, Keith Tam, Underware, and many others. The Conference content is managed by John Hudson and Ross Mills of Tiro Typeworks, Vancouver, with assistance from Nick Shinn and Rod McDonald and advice from ATypI Board members Roger Black (Font Bureau, Danilo Black), David Lemon (Adobe Systems), John D. Berry (CreativePro), and Jean-François Porchez (Porchez Typofonderie). There are several additional activities already planned to coincide with the Conference. Adobe and Microsoft will be jointly offering an OpenType workshop on September 24th and 25th. FontLab will be hosting a Workshop on OpenType tools on September 25th. The Emily Carr Institute will be hosting a two-day, hands-on letterpress workshop for a very limited number of participants on September 24th and 25th. We will be having our traditional Auction, Gala Dinner, and the daily newspaper as well. The conference pricing – all in US dollars – is as follows: Members - Early registration, through August 4: $490, thereafter: $560 Non-members - Early registration, through August 4: $560, thereafter: $625 Students (limited seats available): $230 The Adobe and Microsoft 2-day OpenType workshop is $100. The FontLab 1-day OpenType tools workshop is $50. The Emily Carr letterpress workshop, a hands-on training class using their letterpress shop and limited to only 12 people on a first-come, first-served basis, is $250.
