Magazine Ad Pages Up 2.3%, Revenue Up 11.2% in May

New York, NY (June 10, 2003)—Total magazine advertising revenue for the month of May increased 11.2% compared to May of last year, closing at $1,688,569,082 according to Publishers Information Bureau (PIB). Ad pages for May totaled 20,807.37, up 2.3% from last year. Year-to-date, advertising revenue closed at $7,011,010,257, an increase of 10.2%, and ad pages were 90,338.42, up 2.9% from last year. May 2003 vs. 2002 Seven of the 12 major advertising categories experienced growth in ad revenue over May 2002, while six of 12 recorded ad page growth. Automotive, Apparel & Accessories, Drugs & Remedies, Home Furnishings & Supplies, Technology and Toiletries & Cosmetics saw increases in both revenue and pages in May 2003. Financial, Insurance & Real Estate and Public Transportation, Hotels & Resorts recorded the biggest declines in revenues and pages. (Twelve categories are the most significant contributors to PIB revenue, comprising more than 85% of total advertising spending.) January – May 2003 vs. 2002 Nine out of the 12 major advertising categories sustained dollar gains for the year-to-date comparison, while six of 12 saw growth in ad pages. Ad page and revenue increases were seen in Automotive, Drugs & Remedies, Home Furnishings & Supplies, Retail and Toiletries & Cosmetics. Direct Response, Financial, Insurance & Real Estate and Technology experienced declines in both dollars and pages, year-to-date. "We are pleased to see growth in many of the major ad categories in May," said Ellen Oppenheim, Executive Vice President/Chief Marketing Officer, Magazine Publishers of America. "The Automotive category continues to grow, due to increased spending by both domestic and import manufacturers. Apparel & Accessories registered a notable increase in spending in a range of products, including bridal, watches, jeans and upscale fashion. Technology, showing a significant improvement over May 2002, experienced a boost in advertising from hardware, software and telecommunications companies."
