HP Receives Awards from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Press release from the issuing company

PALO ALTO, Calif.--April 22, 2003-- HP has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with two awards recognizing HP's exceptional work and commitment to the environment. HP's site in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and its product recycling solutions facility in Roseville, Calif., will receive the awards at EPA ceremonies taking place this week. "HP strives to develop programs that reduce our environmental footprint, as well as those of our customers and partners," said Walt Rosenberg, vice president, corporate, social and environmental responsibility, HP Corporate Affairs. "The EPA Environmental Quality Awards are a tremendous honor, and HP is gratified that these sites have been recognized for their hard work and the commitment HP continues to make to the environment." The EPA is awarding its 2003 Environmental Achievement Award for US Region 9 to HP product recycling solutions facility in Roseville. HP is the only technology company to have its own computer hardware recycling facilities in the United States. With its partners, HP operates one of the world's largest hardware recycling facilities. HP's environmentally sound management of end-of-life hardware turns unwanted products into valuable commodities that can be reused to produce new products, reducing the burden on the Earth's resources. Together with a new operation in Nashville, Tenn., these facilities in the United States process more than 3 million pounds of unwanted computer hardware every month. More information is available at http://www.hp.com/recycle. "These EPA awards validate our commitment to environmental sustainability, and we will use this mandate to continue to explore and test further innovations as we continuously improve our recycling programs," said Renee St. Denis, manager, HP Product Recycling Solutions. HP's Puerto Rico site has received the 2003 U.S. EPA Environmental Quality Award for the Business and Industry Category for US EPA Region 2. Significant environmental achievements at the Aguadilla facilities include: reduction in the amount of waste diverted from landfills; reduction in the amount of energy consumption; reduction of water consumption; and the development of environmentally friendly business processes. "We are proud that the significant environmental accomplishments of the HP Aguadilla facility were recognized by the EPA," said Juan Berrios Lassus, manager, environmental health and safety, HP Caribe. "We will continue to invest in programs to reduce the environmental impact of HP operations around the world."
