Neenah Paper Receives Smartwood Certification

Press release from the issuing company

ROSWELL, Ga. (March 11, 2003) - Neenah Paper, the leading manufacturer of premium uncoated writing, text and cover papers, has received chain-of-custody certification from SmartWood, accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for two colors of paper in the Environment Brand. “FSC accredits and monitors forestry certifiers and has significant support from environmental organizations around the world, ” said Gerry Rector, senior product development manager, Neenah Paper. “We decided to pursue FSC certification both to support sound forest stewardship practices and to provide more choices for our customers.” The certification applies to Neenah Paper’s Environment Brand FSC-certified White and Ultra Bright White. FSC-certified paper must contain a minimum of 17.5 percent FSC content and 82.5 percent post consumer content. The new paper will feature the FSC trademark on its packaging, which ensures that the pulp comes from well-managed forests that meet the internationally recognized standards of the Forest Stewardship Council. Neenah Paper is certified through SmartWood, a forestry program of the Rainforest Alliance and an international conservation organization. FSC chain-of-custody certification was developed as a means of ensuring that the standards and guidelines of certification are met from the forest to the finished product. In addition to the new FSC-certified paper in the Environment Brand, Neenah Paper offers paper with 100 percent post consumer content in two colors - PC 100 White and PC 100 Natural, as well as paper that is manufactured with an alternative fiber source - 50 percent sugar cane - in two colors, Tortilla and Mesa White. The 13 other colors in the Environment Papers are made of 100 percent recycled content, of which 30 percent is post consumer. The Environment Papers from Neenah Paper meet EPA recommendations for post consumer recycled content.
