Bowne & Co. Names Smith President of Financial Print Unit

Press release from the issuing company

NEW YORK, Jan. 6 -- Bowne & Co., Inc., a global leader in delivering high-value document management solutions, today announced the appointment of Reed R. Smith, 45, as President of Bowne's Financial Print unit and a Senior Vice President of the parent company. Smith has been President of Bowne Financial Print's Eastern Region since 2000 and his previous day-to-day responsibilities are being assumed by Bowne International President William P. Penders, 41, as part of the consolidation of the Eastern Region with Bowne International. Matteo W. LaMuraglia, 50, currently Senior Vice President and Sales Director of Financial Print's Eastern Region, will assume that title for the entire business unit, reporting to Smith. The Financial Print division had been led by Bowne & Co. President Carl J. Crosetto since the retirement of Duncan P. Varty in mid-2002. Bowne's Financial Print division, one of the company's four core business units, is the world's largest financial printer as well as the leading filer of EDGAR documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on behalf of its clients. Bowne continues to be the global leader in managing documents for initial public offerings, mergers and acquisitions and securities compliance. "The appointments of talented executives such as Reed, Bill and Matt once again demonstrate Bowne's depth of management in Financial Print and throughout the company," said Crosetto in making the announcement. "With a strong management team, substantial investments in technology, a streamlined and flexible network of operations, and the best workforce in the financial printing industry, Bowne is capable of meeting today's marketplace fluctuations and capitalizing on tomorrow's opportunities. We wish these three talented veterans every success in strengthening our industry leadership." Smith joined Bowne in 1986 and held a number of Financial Print sales and management positions before becoming President of Bowne of Atlanta in 1994, with responsibility for all Financial Print operations in the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico. He was previously associated with the Stein Printing Company. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management from Georgia Institute of Technology. Penders, President of Bowne International since 2000, began his career at Bowne in 1986 as a Financial Print Customer Service Representative and became a Sales Executive two years later. In 1992, he moved to London as Vice President and Sales Manager of Bowne's first international operation. Penders became Managing Director of Bowne of Singapore in 1995 and Director of International Sales and Operations, based in New York, in 1997. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University. LaMuraglia came to Bowne in 1983 as a Financial Print Sales Executive and was named a Vice President of Sales for Bowne of New York in 1988. He became Sales Manager of Bowne of New York in 1996 and Senior Vice President and Eastern Region Sales Director four years later. LaMuraglia holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire.
