Knight Ridder Goes Live Digital Rights Management Solution

Press release from the issuing company

DANVERS, Mass.--Dec. 13, 2002-- Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), the world's largest licensing agent for text reproduction rights, and Knight Ridder Digital, the operator of the Real Cities network of local media Web sites, today announced that Rightslink has gone live on more than 30 of Knight Ridder's online publications. Rightslink, CCC's popular digital rights management solution, enables publishers to license the use of their copyrighted content, 24/7, directly from their Web sites. The participating Knight Ridder publications include well-known newspapers such as The Miami Herald (www.miami.com), the Philadelphia Inquirer (www.philly.com) and The San Jose Mercury News (www.bayarea.com). "The addition of Knight Ridder, the second-largest newspaper publisher in the U.S., boosts Rightslink's growing momentum and affirms our leadership in online, point-of-content licensing services," said Bob Weiner, CCC's vice president, sales and rightsholder relations. "Rightslink is a great tool for publishers and users alike because it makes the permissioning and payment process simple and straightforward, increasing the likelihood of compliance." Ken Doctor, vice president of content services with Knight Ridder Digital, said Rightslink is a key part of Knight Ridder's intent to establish the consumer and business value of its award-winning editorial content. "Rightslink makes it fast and easy for consumers to pay for unique, premium information at the point-of-content, which is the key to compliance," Doctor said. "Rightslink does the calculation and the transaction right on our Web sites, leaving the consumer free to resume browsing as soon as the transaction is completed. We chose Rightslink for its one-stop-shopping convenience." Rightslink extends the value of Web content to consumers by licensing additional uses, such as republication in books, CD/DVDs, magazines, journals, newspapers and newsletters, as well as posting on Web sites. The service also helps publishers by providing real-time access to sales data, such as the content most popular with customers. By leveraging this information, publishers such as Knight Ridder can better serve the marketplace while effectively maximizing their return on assets.
