Recipient of Association's inaugural award honored for more than a half-century of championing education in the graphic arts. PARAMUS, N.J., November 8 , 2002 - The National Association for Printing Leadership presented its inaugural NAPL Education Leadership Award to graphic arts veteran Lyman Henderson, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to furthering education in the graphic communications industry. The Association's Board of Directors established the NAPL Education Leadership Award to recognize graphic arts leaders who have made significant contributions to education initiatives in, and for, the industry. "Lyman has been a champion of the education interests of our industry for more than 50 years," said I. Gregg Van Wert, NAPL president and CEO. "His contributions have spanned many arenas, including his perceptive writing, his dedication as a teacher, and his limitless service to industry organizations. NAPL is extremely proud to have Lyman as the first recipient of the NAPL Education Leadership Award." The award was presented to Henderson by NAPL Chairman James W. Hyder, Jr., president and CEO of Fetter Printing Company, Louisville, Ky., at the Association's Annual Meeting, held in Chicago, on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002. Henderson is honorary chairman of Davis & Henderson Ltd., an Ontario, Canada based printing communications firm, where he had served as president and then chairman. He is a past president of the Canadian Litho Club and the Canadian Printing Industries Association. A member of NAPL's Soderstrom Society, Henderson continues to serve the industry as a professional writer, speaker, seminar leader, and consultant. He has served on the faculty of NAPL's Management Institute certification program, and lectured on marketing in the Graphic Communications Management course at Ryerson Polytechnic University. His books include The Pricing Game, How to Make a Business Plan That Works, Hands-on Marketing for the Printer, and Sam, Sam, the Printer's Man. He has also pursued many voluntary endeavors in the arts, religion, and health and welfare, and has served as president of many voluntary organizations, including the Ontario and Toronto Divisions of the Canadian Cancer Society; the National Ballet of Canada; the Good Neighbours' Club, and the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto. Appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1995, he is now an advisor to several arts organizations. A native of Toronto, Henderson served as a Captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery from 1942-46. He and his wife, Ann, have three children and five grandchildren.
