DiMS! JDF-Compliance Enables Complete End-to-End System Integration

Press release from the issuing company

XML-based MIS Solution Maximizes Communication of Data Across Entire Range of Printing Processes Lisle, IL – October 30, 2002 – DiMS! organizing print announces the 6.0 release of DiMS!, a JDF-compliant Management Information Solution that bridges the communication gap between prepress, production and post-press through the use of standard XML language. Supported by an open architecture, DiMS! uses JDF (Job Definition Format) to enable printers to realize increased business efficiencies and streamlined processes through real-time, automated data exchange across the entire print management process. The future success of printing companies depends on having efficient production workflows. Heightened control over every step of the printing process — enabled by real-time transfer of data and information — yields increased quality, speed and cost savings. In the context of printing and graphic companies, the ability for several different processors to communicate with each other is fundamental — not just the ability for the processors to talk to each other, but to understand. DiMS!’ open-ended structure enables the computer-based integration of all processes necessary to execute a printing job — from creation through shipping. This move toward Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is achieved through the use of JDF, the extremely versatile, comprehensive standard file format that serves as the critical link between Management Information Systems and production processes. Not only is data instantaneously communicated throughout the entire integrated system, but DiMS!’ open XML structure easily interfaces with other systems and technologies. As each event within the workflow occurs, DiMS! automatically records the results into the job, thereby facilitating tracking at every stage. For instance, customer information — contact names, job specifications, historical reports, pricing lists, customer feedback, etc. — only needs to be input into the CRM module once. Then, from inception to completion of an order, the data is linked across the entire system, enabling real-time job tracking, shop floor data monitoring, inventory management, job costing and invoicing. DiMS!’ JDF structure also allows printers to increase their responsiveness by building a record of customer interactions and employing a messaging feature (characteristic of JDF-compliant MIS systems) in the form of convenient prompts to indicate necessary follow-up actions triggered by key events within the printing process. DiMS! also enables printers to capture valuable information with an eye toward evaluating and, if necessary, adjusting operational processes for optimal efficiency. The flexible JDF data structure allows for easy and uniform communication of important data across all channels — whether the requisite data takes the form of internal or external documents, customer-focused or management-driven analyses, administrative or strategic reports. DiMS!’ smooth information flow eliminates wasted time re-keying critical data into the system; allows users to effortlessly perform core functions such as data collection, job tracking and order fulfillment; and facilitates the creation of comprehensive analyses and management reports pertaining to collected performance data. The end result is increased productivity achieved through the seamless, bi-directional flow of information between DiMS!’ MIS and the production process.
