International Paper Makes Executive Appointments

STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 22 -- International Paper Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer John Faraci today announced that Andy Lessin has been named senior vice president - internal audit, effective immediately. "Andy has a strong track record in his role as corporate controller. He will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the internal audit function," said Faraci. "As we move forward in a new world of higher expectations for corporate accountability, Andy's leadership and counsel will be invaluable." Lessin has served as vice president - finance and chief accounting officer since 2000. Prior to his current position, he was vice president and controller from 1995 to 2000, and controller from 1991 to 1995. Also, International Paper Executive Vice President David Oskin today announced that Brian McDonald will become president of IP Asia effective December 1, 2002. McDonald currently serves as general director of International Paper's OAO Svetogorsk business in Russia. "Brian brings a wealth of leadership and experience to his new position. He has had a very successful track record at Svetogorsk and in prior assignments, and we look forward to applying his energy and determination to the development of our business in Asia," said Oskin. McDonald succeeds Peter Springford, who will become CEO and managing director of New Zealand-based Carter Holt Harvey. McDonald has been with International Paper for 15 years. He joined the company in 1987 at Strathmore Papers in Westfield, Mass. He had served in a variety of assignments of increasing responsibility prior to his move to Svetogorsk in 1999.
