Mass Market Scanner Revenue Expected to Reach $1 Billion in 2002

Press release from the issuing company

(Boston, MA) August 20, 2002... According to a new study from InfoTrends Research Group, unit sales of mass market scanners are expected to reach 6.9 million by the end of 2002 and revenue is expected to reach over $1 billion, representing a growth of 11% over 2001. Through 2003, mass market scanner revenue is forecast to grow, although unit shipments of scanners are expected to decrease 2% from 2002 to 2003. Strong revenue growth is primarily attributed to an increase in consumers purchasing replacement scanners. Many of these consumers are looking for a high-quality scanner that offers more features than their previous model. These consumers are expected to pay over $100 for their scanners, which will boost revenue even though fewer scanners will be sold overall. The average selling price for scanners is expected to increase from $124 in 2001 to $156 in 2002. “The $100 - $300 price range is the sweet spot for mass market scanners. These scanners are packed with features, yet they often permit vendors to achieve relatively high margins on each sale,” said Kerry Flatley, a Research Analyst at InfoTrends Research Group. “HP, Epson, and Canon are expected to maintain a high average price per unit, which will allow them to capture a greater percentage of revenue share in comparison to unit share than their competitors. These vendors will achieve a combined revenue share of 69%.” InfoTrends’ new report is entitled “2002 Mass Market Scanner Forecast, North America” and provides a five-year forecast, vendor unit and revenue share, and analysis on feature trends. Additionally, the report examines market trends such as industry consolidation, MFP sales, and USB 2.0.
