MAN Roland JobPilot and PressMonitor Added to GATF Intertech Award Roster

Press release from the issuing company

Pittsburgh, Pa., August 7, 2002 -- A twelfth technology has been added to the list of technologies receiving a 2002 GATF InterTech Technology Award. As a result of a clerical error, the technology was omitted from GATF’s July 25 press release announcing the results of the award. The award honors excellence in innovative technology for the graphic communications industry and signifies technologies predicted to have a major impact on production and profitability over the next five years. Submitted by MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AG (www.man-roland.com) as one entry, JobPilot and PressMonitor are two new software modules that work together to advance the capabilities of MAN Roland’s PECOM press operating and networking system. JobPilot creates, edits, and organizes the electronic job tickets that enable printers to preset more than 100 automated functions on MAN Roland equipment, while the press prints the previous job. This significantly maximizes uptime and minimizes makeready time. PressMonitor can access the working status of jobs currently in production and allows all pressroom shifts to be continuously monitored. Plus, PressMonitor can callup print production data on completed work, revealing pressroom trends that otherwise would have gone unnoticed. For instance, one PressMonitor-equipped printer changed to a lesser quality cardboard to cut costs. But PressMonitor revealed that the savings were non-existent because the cheaper stock generated more dust in the press, doubling the amount of blanket washups required every week. "MAN Roland’s PressMonitor is furthering the ‘science’ of business by tracking how consumables are being used. Furthermore, JobPilot creates greater collaboration between press and prepress, thus greatly boosting productivity," said one of the InterTech judges. Although GATF has sponsored the award for the past 24 years, technologies are selected by an anonymous group of industry experts and users who are independent of GATF.
