Innovations from Heidelberg at IPEX 2002: Plans Revealed

Press release from the issuing company

February 21, 2002 - It measures the color control strips in the print sheet spectrally, analyzes them colorimetrically and calculates the parameters for online color control. AxisControl therefore facilitates direct and effective quality control on the CP2000 Center. This ensures that the prints get to color faster, and continuous control over the entire job run is assured. AxisControl is available for the entire Speedmaster series, and is particularly ideal for the Speedmaster SM 52, SM/CD 74 and SM 74 DI models. For high-end industrial applications, Heidelberg will be showing off its tried-and-tested Prinect module ImageControl. This color measuring system measures the entire print image, takes color reference values from the digital prepress and generates color measurement data for creating ICC profiles. With Prinect, Heidelberg is offering its customers modular workflow components that cover the entire value-added chain. At the IPEX trade show stand, visitors will see how production data and business management data can flow together perfectly in the Prinect integration center. The result is efficient and transparent workflows for prepress operators. The Prinect module Prinance represents Heidelberg’s own management information system (MIS). This professional costing and job processing software has been designed specifically for small- to medium-sized businesses in the print industry. Direct control of peripherals Heidelberg will also be showing its new CANopen technology – a further key step towards even more convenient press operation. CAN stands for “Controller Area Network” and represents a globally standardized data bus system. CANopen supports the integration of all control functions for the Speedmaster Star peripherals into the central CP200 Press Control Center. The user can save time and enjoy greater convenience thanks to the CP 2000 Center’s touchscreen. The intuitive user guidance has been standardized and is easy to understand, meaning that new members of staff can be trained very quickly. A further advantage for customers is the remote service facility that CANopen supports for all peripherals. Heidelberg is currently the only manufacturer to use CANopen technology in series production. At the moment, Heidelberg is working on the development of a fully-automatic mechanism for transferring control and consumables data from the Star peripherals to the Prinance management information system. Environmentally-friendly printing For the first time at any IPEX, Heidelberg will this year be presenting its “Environmental Information Center”, thus highlighting the importance of this issue. Simple models will show customers how money can be saved with peripherals while at the same time saving the environment. Examples of these include the automatic ink supply, powder extraction, bilateral powder coating or units for recycling washup solution. The Speedmaster SM 102 equipped with Star peripherals was last year awarded the “Emissions-tested” eco-certificate. The press also meets the standards set by the British Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for UV. UV brings shining results Visitors to the packaging and label printing sector will experience a real innovation – from IPEX 2002, the Speedmaster CD 74 will be available with fully-integrated UV technology. This complete solution for the medium-format market enables printers to finish their products with extremely high-quality effects. The Speedmaster CD 74 will now be able to handle UV inks, inline UV coating or inline double coating. “With the Speedmaster CD 74, we’re offering our customers a solution for producing cost-effectively and being competitive”, explains Dr. Klaus Spiegel, the Member of the Management Board at Heidelberg responsible for sheetfed offset. “The entire production process is highly-automated, flexible and runs extremely efficiently”. There are now more than 120 presses installed worldwide. This is a success story that speaks for itself, since the CD 74 was only put into series production at the end of 2000. “We developed the CD 74 with integrated UV technology to meet the increased demand for quality finished products”, continues Dr. Spiegel. “This harnesses the advantages of the standard press and gives printers a real chance to shine on a hard-fought market”. The CD 74 is fully-equipped ex-works ready for UV printing, and all the modules and the newly-developed DryStar UV drying units are fully coordinated with each other. All printing units are prepared ready for use of interdeck dryers. The Speedmaster CD 74 UV is available in the packaging format (60 x 74 cm) and the commercial printing format (53 x 74 cm). All models feature an extended delivery as standard, which provides a major boost to production and process reliability. NexPress with new software At IPEX, Heidelberg will be showcasing its entire portfolio of products and solutions for the digital printing market. The NexPress color digital press and the new NexTreme software support variable data printing and thus represent a professional solution for entry onto the 1:1 marketing sector. More customer benefits with finishing In the postpress sector, workflow and press setup solutions are given top priority. On show, for example, will be the ST 400 gang-stitcher in conjunction with a long Speedmaster Perfector press. The ST 400 uses the integrated, automatic format presetting system “Ready Set” and mobile feeder units with servo drives. This means that regular job changes can be handled cost-effectively and quickly. With an output of 14,000 cycles per hour, the Stitchmaster ST 400 is flexible enough to enable even large job runs to be produced in outstanding quality. Using the example of a mailshot, the folders section will demonstrate the additional added-value potential it holds.
