McLEAN, Va.--Feb. 7, 2002--Gannett Co reported today that total pro forma operating revenue declined 23 percent for the twelfth period ended December 30, 2001. The twelfth period spanned four weeks this year instead of the five-week period last year. Comparisons are unfavorably impacted by the absence of the extra week and, therefore, are not representative of current business trends. Pro forma newspaper advertising revenues declined 24 percent in the four-week December period on a pro forma ROP volume decline of 19 percent and a 20 percent decline in preprint distribution. Excluding the extra week in the twelfth period of 2000, pro forma ROP volume would have declined approximately 3 percent. Pro forma newspaper advertising revenues decreased 8 percent on a 52 week to 53 week basis. Pro forma classified revenues decreased 24 percent in the four-week December period on a 16 percent ad volume decline. Excluding the fifth week from last December, pro forma classified ad volume would have increased about 2 percent. On a four week to five week basis, employment revenues declined 44 percent, real estate revenues were 17 percent lower, and automotive fell 11 percent.
