Knight Ridder Releases Ad Statistical Report, Down 8.5% for the Year

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 25 - Knight Ridder reports that on a comparative basis, December was pretty much like November, although the year-over-year declines in general and classified were slightly less than November. Total operating revenue was down 10.5% for the month of December and down 8.2% for the year to date. Advertising revenue was down 10.5% for the month and down 8.5% for the year to date. All the large markets were soft. General and classified were down slightly less, year over year, than they had been in November. General revenue was down 9.2% for the month and 10.3% for the year to date. Travel/tourism, telecom, auto and finance were strong in most markets. For the month, Kansas City was up 37.6% and Detroit was up 4.1%. The other large markets were down. Classified revenue was down 19.7% for the month and down 16.1% for the year to date. Fort Worth was up 4.0% for the month, and Wichita was up 1.6%. The other large markets were down. Retail was down 5.6% for the month and down 0.7% for the year to date. Charlotte was up 1.1% for the month; the other large markets were soft. Circulation revenue was up 1.4% for the month. Other revenue was down 41.0% for the month, reflecting primarily a decline in operating results from Detroit (which under new accounting rules are shown as a net number), and a decline in commercial print revenue.
