Adobe Announces New Version Of InCopy

Press release from the issuing company

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Oct. 15, 2001-- Adobe Systems Incorporated, the leader in network publishing, today announced Adobe InCopy 2.0(TM), an editorial application built on Adobe InDesign architecture, the award winning professional layout and design program. InCopy software is designed for writers, editors and copy fitters working in cross media publishing environments. New features include support for extensible markup language (XML), enhanced editing tools such as dynamic spell check, and an improved user interface that lets users work on multiple views of a story simultaneously. InCopy 2.0 is the result of feedback from systems integrators and customers and includes features that make the most of critical moments in a publishing cycle. InCopy streamlines the layout and editing process for writers, saving time and reducing approval cycles. In addition, formatting editorial copy is simplified for designers by using InDesign software to produce a professional page layout. The Boston Globe, New England's most widely read newspaper, met with Adobe engineers several times this year to discuss what InCopy 2.0 needs to provide for newspaper copy editors. "We have looked at several newspaper publishing systems, and InCopy shows the potential for delivering what copy editors need,'' said Ralph Brown, systems editor at The Boston Globe. "Adobe did a great job of listening to our specific needs -- such as separate galley and page views -- and turning them into InCopy features.'' Streamlining Publishing Workflows XML content has become an integral part of cross-media workflows. InCopy 2.0 provides writers and editors with the ability to create, import, edit and export stories in XML format. Because InCopy and InDesign share the same XML support, stories created in InCopy can be imported directly into InDesign. This separation of form and content also allows InCopy to create editorial content that can be used for many different media types in any type of workflow. "As developers of the K4 Publishing System for InDesign and InCopy, this version will significantly enhance our solutions,'' said Andreas Schrader, managing director, SoftCare GmbH. "With the introduction of XML-based articles, InCopy is a powerful editing tool that can be easily integrated into a publishing workflow.'' New User Interface and Controls A new full text view within InCopy allows for the entire screen to be used when editing. The galley view and layout view can open at the same time, giving users the freedom to edit copy in the new full text mode, while viewing accurate InDesign line breaks in the layout view. Menu functions are mapped to the keyboard so that writers can more efficiently create, navigate and manage editorial documents without relying on the mouse, saving a significant amount of time. Collapsible, customizable palettes on the editing screen allow users to adapt to their working environment, and save valuable screen space. Professional Editing Tools Several new editing tools provide professional writers and editors a more streamlined editorial creation process. Dynamic spell check and a built-in thesaurus help writers quickly find errors as well as improve writing quality. Tables can be created inside InCopy and InDesign and easily imported and exported from the applications. New text macro functionality for fast text substitution and replacement helps editors manage the writing process more effectively. Unlike word processing applications, InCopy includes features important to professional editors and writers, leaving the design to layout artists. Improved Collaboration Annotating and adding comments to text has become easier with an improved In-Line Notes feature. The ability to add comments to text, hide comments, and filter them, improve the editing process overall. Notes can also be exported as Adobe portable document format (PDF) comments to improve collaboration. Pricing and Availability Adobe InCopy 2.0 will be available to system integrators as part of an integrated solution in the second (calendar) quarter of 2002. InCopy will be available solely through the Adobe InDesign system integrator channel. Pricing will be determined by the integrators based on individual installations.
