Time, CMP Media, and Software Vendors Show Value of PRISM and ICE

Press release from the issuing company

Seybold San Francisco— September 24, 2001— Members of the PRISM (Publishing Standards for Industry Standard Metadata) and ICE (Information and Content Exchange) Working Groups, along with IDEAlliance, the host organization of these two groups, announced today that they are demonstrating systems that integrate the two standards to solve mission critical problems. These demonstrations take place in the IDEAlliance booth #3248 at the Seybold Exhibition. PRISM is a standard for publishing metadata. "The easiest way to think about metadata is that it is similar to a card catalog entry for digital assets," said Mario Buscemi, Director of Strategic Projects, CMP Media, LLC. "PRISM's ability to carry fantastically detailed subject information lets people send out very tightly targeted content feeds which are appropriately managed by ICE-based software". ICE is an industry standard communications protocol optimized for reliable, managed content exchange between business partners. "Broad industry support for ICE over three years has allowed us to easily demonstrate interoperability among our commercial products" said Laird Popkin, CTO 3Path, Inc. and chair of the ICE Authoring Group. "Managed content delivery provided by ICE combined with rich metadata provided by PRISM has enabled the exciting B2B and B2C scenarios that we are demonstrating here at Seybold." Publishers depend on opening new markets, but realize that producing new content is expensive. They were able to create new vehicles with existing content but to date, that too has been expensive due to the resource-intensive nature of search and retrieval and rights checking. However, using standards to add value to the content and automate some of those processes can be very effective. To show how this can be easily done, Active Data Exchange and Interwoven, using content from CMP Media and Time Inc., demonstrate merging and filtering based on PRISM metadata. ICE-based syndication is then used to automate delivery to specific corporate portals. "A state-of-the-art publishing system should make it easy for subscribers to specify the kinds of content they want to receive," said Dr. Ron Daniel Jr., Standards Architect at Interwoven and chair of the PRISM Working Group. "It should reliably deliver that targeted information while respecting rights and restrictions prescribed by the publisher. ICE and PRISM have come together to meet this market need." The same principles applied in a consumer context are also being demonstrated. In this scenario, Interwoven uses MetaTagger, its automatic metadata creation software, to add PRISM metadata to articles from Time Inc. magazines. Interwoven's ICE-based content delivery system then delivers those articles to 3Path's ICE-based service which automatically distributes the articles to large numbers of desktops where they are presented by Zinio's electronic magazine technology. (Zinio also uses PRISM metadata to assemble the magazine.) The demonstration also includes a personalized clipping service in which PRISM rights metadata is checked before a page can be clipped. If the rights are not available, a message to that effect is displayed and the rights holder's name is also shown. Both revenue generation and cost controls affect the bottom line. In this economic climate, increased efficiencies in production are no longer an option; they are a requirement. Automating production tasks with the help of standards has therefore become increasingly appealing. For large aggregators such as Lexis-Nexis, PRISM metadata can help reduce technology costs, increase control, and improve the reliability of many operations, including rights tracking. Another demonstration shows how this can be accomplished. Another way to conserve resources is to improve data mining of existing content to provide insight into business trends. Using large numbers of articles from Time Magazine tagged with PRISM metadata, Antarcti.ca creates thematic maps and demonstrates how these maps can be used to graphically analyze the collections. Effective and cost-efficient rights tracking is also a big challenge for content suppliers and their business partners. Today, just checking the existing rights of individual digital assets is enormously time consuming. Therefore, automating even just this aspect of rights management would provide huge cost savings. At the Seybold Exhibition, PRISM members demonstrate PRISM's practical approach to solving this problem. About the PRISM specification PRISM (Publishing Requirements for Industry Standard Metadata) is a metadata specification designed to assist in automating, repurposing, archiving, production, aggregation and redistribution of any kind of content both within and outside the enterprise. Version 1.0 was released in April 2001 and is now being implemented in pilot projects for major publishers. The standard was originally intended for use in magazine publishing and its initial proponents were commercial content creators and consumers along with the vendors who focus on that market. However, PRISM has now proved useful for all kinds of publishing including: news, e-books, journals, financial publishing and so on. Additionally, due to its horizontal applicability PRISM has gained support from a number of companies who see it as applicable to the publishing-like needs of all organizations, such as Data Channel and ATG. About the PRISM Working Group and Network PRISM, (Publishing Requirements for Industry Standard Metadata) is a key industry initiative hosted by IDEAlliance (International Digital Enterprise Alliance) and sponsored by a group of companies who have an interest in creating and using a common metadata standard as a basic part of their content infrastructure. The group consists of software developers and content suppliers and consumers who are involved in content creation, consumption, management, aggregation and distribution, whether commercially or within intranet and extranet frameworks. The PRISM Working Group and the PRISM Network are open to all companies. Current members include 3Path, Inc., Active Data Exchange, Inc., Adobe Systems, Inc., Antarcti.ca Systems Inc., Artesia Technologies, Inc., Business Wire Inc (IPTC liaison), CMP Media, LLC, CreoScitex, a division of Creo Products Inc., Easypress Technologies Inc., Hachette Filipacchi Magazines, Interwoven, Inc., LingoMotors, The McGraw-Hill Companies, Managing Editor inc., Netscape Corporation, Publishing Connections Inc., Time Inc., Vignette Corporation, and Zinio Systems Inc. About the ICE Specification ICE is an XML-based communications protocol optimized for managing the regular exchange of content and data among business partners. It addresses the need for automated, reliable, secure distribution and redistribution of all types of commercial and non-commercial content. The first version of the ICE specification was released in 1998. An update, ICE 1.1 has also been released. In addition, there is also an ICE cookbook to assist developers in using ICE as well as an open source reference implementation toolkit called ICE CUBES that is in development and is available at www.sourceforge.com. ICE has already been incorporated into many shipping software products and adoption of the specification continues. The most recent product to ship with "ICE inside" is Oracle 9i. About the ICE Authoring and Advisory Groups ICE (Information and Content Exchange) is a key industry initiative hosted by IDEAlliance and sponsored by a group of companies who have a common interest in solving the problem of automating and managing the exchange of every type of content. The group consists of software developers and companies who distribute or consume content, whether commercially or within intranet and extranet frameworks. The ICE Authoring Group and the ICE Network are open to all companies and include companies such as 3Path, Inc., Active Data Exchange, Inc., Adobe Systems, Inc., HP, Cablevision Systems, Documentum, Inc., Easypress Technologies, FullDegree, Inc., Infopark AG, Intershop Communications, Interwoven Inc., IntraNet Solutions, Kinecta Corporation, MediaApps, National Semi-Conductor, Oracle Corporation, Tribune Media, and Vignette Corporation. About IDEAlliance IDEAlliance-formerly Graphic Communications Association-is the leading standards development organization for the print, Web and cross-media industries.
