Thanks to outstanding project competence, MAN Roland's new COLORMAN system was commissioned at the Badischen Neuesten Nachrichten (BNN) newspaper publishing company in Karlsruhe, Germany, only two years after it was ordered. The one-level press with the folder on top was configured to fit precisely in the existing production spaces. The existing plate tensioning system, from another manufacturer, was retrofitted to the MAN Roland centrifugal plate tensioning system. Now standard plates can be used. The new system, in the ten-cylinder satellite configuration, operates at 43,000 cylinder rotations per hour and gives BNN more color capability and even better on-time performance and punctuality – essential for a daily newspaper. In this regard, Hans W. Baur pointed out the humidity in the Karlsruhe region, a characteristic of the area that often contributes to web breaks. The new COLORMAN handles this problem. Delays caused by web breaks are now a thing the past thanks to new greater press capacity. "Naturally, problems cropped up during installation and commissioning," said operations manager Frieder Kiefer. "But that was precisely when MAN Roland showed what cooperation with a competent partner can achieve." Four-color Sunday newspaper During the week the BNN has a circulation of 170,000 copies, and the Sunday edition reaches 190,000 copies. Since July 1st, the newspaper features four-color open-out pages - up to seven of them in Saturday editions of 70 to 100 pages. The company also prints a free Sunday edition that addresses fashion, local news, celebrities, and children, featuring crossword puzzles and comic strips. This four-color 24-page newspaper is produced entirely on the COLORMAN in straight runs with a circulation of 150,000 copies (200,000 copies since July 1st).
