Agfa Open Access Lets Agfa Sherpa Proof Non-Agfa And Proprietary Formats

Press release from the issuing company

PRINT 01, Chicago, Illinois, September 6, 2001 – Agfa announced Open Access a software module for all Agfa Sherpa digital color-proofing systems. Running on the system’s Proofer RIP, Open Access accepts most legacy file formats and converts those to a Postscript or PDF file for output on any Agfa Sherpa proofer. This allows the Sherpa to integrate easily into most non-Agfa workflows and handle third-party files such as Heidelberg Delta List, Scitex CT/LW or Harlequin ScriptWorks bitmaps. The Apogee Proofer RIP then applies color-management profiles to ensure absolute color accuracy for contract proofing applications. Agfa Open Access preserves absolute data integrity by applying a PDF or PostScript wrapper around the RIPed content. In this way, the original file can travel intact through the workflow as an industry-standard open format. Agfa Open Access also preserves the spot colors in the original file, thus taking advantage of the Pantone libraries and custom colors defined in Lab values in the Apogee Proofing RIP. Open Access accepts Heidelberg, Scitex and Harlequin files in an unscreened, un-rendered format. The Agfa Proofer RIP can then render and color manage the proprietary data for optimum output on the AgfaJet Sherpa. HotFolder technology lets the Sherpa integrate easily in any Windows 2000 or Windows NT network. The Sherpa can also be configured into Unix-based networks. Agfa developed Open Access to provide all print providers Sherpa’s affordable, high-quality digital contract color proofing capability. Willy Van Dromme, worldwide director of marketing for Agfa proofing said, "With Open Access and the Sherpa we offer open, high speed, cost-effective proofing solutions for any workflow. A reliable digital contract proofing system is essential to realize the benefits of a computer-to-plate workflow. It has been the "missing link” for true unattended workflow automation. With Open Access it is now possible in any workflow.” About the AgfaJet Sherpa Proofing Systems. The AgfaJet Sherpa family of digital proofing systems comprises the Sherpa 2i*, Sherpa 24, Sherpa 43i, Sherpa 54i, Sherpa 62i, SherpaMatic 43 and the Grand Sherpa family. High-quality piezo inkjet technology, six multi-density inks and ColorTune Pro color-management software combine to produce accurate contract color proofs, matching 85% of PANTONE spot colors. ColorTune Pro and AgfaJet Proofing Base media widen the gamut even further for matching logos or other custom colors common in packaging and specialty applications. Quality Management Software (QMS) ensures repeatable proofs from multiple proofers at any time and in any location. Agfa developed the AgfaJet Sherpa system to provide affordable, high-quality contract color proofing for a truly automated all-digital workflow. * The AgfaJet Sherpa 2 is a four-color system for high-speed, double-sided proofing applications. Agfa Open Access is available immediately.
