Heidelberg Unveils New Sunday 2000 Web Press Features, AutoPlate

Press release from the issuing company

The web press considered to be the world’s most advanced is now even better. At Print 01, Heidelberg will demonstrate a new automatic plate changing system for its Sunday 2000. A new pinless folder module for the 16- and 24-page gapless press will also be on display. A Sunday 2000 system, including the GATF InterTech award winning Ecocool dryer and the PCF-1 pinless combination folder, will be in full operation at the show. “The Sunday 2000 provides the highest quality web printing as well as outstanding productivity and efficiency,” said Mark Levin , Heidelberg senior vice president. “AutoPlate and the PFM-2 folder module make this model an even more effective option, especially for fast makeready environments and for commercial printers that print a wide variety of jobs.” Heidelberg has sold more than 30 Sunday 2000 systems worldwide since introducing the press last year, including more than 15 sold in the U.S. “Many of this country’s leading high-quality commercial web printers have ordered Sunday 2000 presses, and many of these are six-, seven-, and even eight-color presses designed to meet the most demanding print quality requirements,” Levin explained. The new AutoPlate automatic plate changing system allows a single operator to change all the plates on a Sunday 2000, or any combination of plates, in less than two minutes. New plates can be placed into cassettes on the printing units, and a push of a button initiates the fully automated sequence. The AutoPlate cassettes can be loaded or unloaded while the press is running or idle without breaking the web. Plate changing times are slashed, plate registration is more precise, and operators are free to complete other makeready tasks. Designed to complement PCF-1 single- or double-chopper pinless combination folders, the new PFM-2 module provides a solution for Sunday 2000 users that primarily use a combination folder but also require a former folder. This pinless freestanding folder module delivers magazine, square tab and slim jim signatures that are open on three sides, with or without laps. With two standard formers, the PFM-2 can deliver two eight-page signatures or four four-page signatures from a four-page-wide press. With a six-wide press, it can also deliver two 12-page signatures. The PFM-2 provides positive signature control for damage free signature handling and reduced sensitivity to paper weight and ink coverage variations. Heidelberg’s exclusive “Decel Drum” technology slows the folded signatures for smooth, shingled delivery without marking or fold defects. Multi-drive technology ensures better web tension control, as well as faster makereadies and folder timing adjustments. The Sunday 2000 is available in a conventional 16-page format as well as a six-pages-across 24-page format. Gapless blanket technology eliminates gap related vibration, allowing high-speed printing in the wider 24-page format without com-promising print quality. The 24-page Sunday 2000 runs at up to 2,000 feet per minute. Top speed for the 16-page version is 2,400 feet per minute. In addition to the PCF-1 pinless combination folder, a PFF-2 pinless former folder is also avail-able. The Sunday 2000’s Omnicon control system allows operators to regulate virtually all press, auxiliary and folder adjustments from the console. A prepress gateway can receive digital data from either a CTP device or a plate scanner and convert the data into ink coverage files used to automatically preset the ink fountains. Fourteen-roll convertible inking and Duotrol dampening systems, as well as auto-matic blanket washers and semi-automatic plate changing, are standard features on the Sunday 2000. A motorized web up device feeds the web to the first printing unit and from the final printing unit up to the slitting module.
