Domtar Renews Commitment to Literacy

Press release from the issuing company

MONTREAL, Nov. 12 2001 - Domtar's commitment to this cause aims at winning the battle against illiteracy. The objective of "The Gift of Reading" is to help underprivileged children and illiterate individuals develop a taste and love for reading, as well as to enable them to discover all of the opportunities it can offer. Domtar, in collaboration with the Quebec Literacy Foundation, invites companies and the general public to purchase a new children's book during the "Salon du Livre de Montreal" or at one of the participating bookstores in Quebec, in order to give to an underprivileged child. "The earlier we encounter reading, the better our chances of succeeding at school," said Raymond Royer, Domtar President and Chief Executive Officer. Domtar is therefore renewing its support in the area of literacy, a cause it has supported since 1997, when it joined forces with the Quebec Literacy Foundation to launch "Domtar's Paper Christmas for Literacy". This latter campaign, currently in its fifth year, aims to increase awareness and support of learning in reading and writing. As part of the 2001 edition, Domtar is donating more than 4 millions sheets of paper to 170 organizations that are helping illiterate individuals learn to read and write, an act greatly appreciated by the literacy community.
