Are eBooks the Next Chapter, or Just An Unfinished Story?
Thursday, July 05, 2001
According to TrendWatch, Sixty-one percent of book publishers consider printing costs to be a business challenge--it's their number one challenge. In fact, most of book publishers' top 10 challenges are print production-related. Meanwhile, "electronic only publications" has more than doubled as a sales opportunity in the past year. There are hundreds of stories being plotted every year in the publishing industry. One scenario suggests that the answer to the challenges of print production is to avoid it entirely. (Book publishers wouldn't be the first to follow this plotline.) If they could still publish books yet eliminate manufacturing costs, physical distribution, and, best of all, returns--wouldn't that be a compelling tale? Although it's possible that eBooks are the next chapter in publishing, at the moment they're still an unsolicited manuscript sitting in the slush pile.
