Macromedia JRun 3.1 Streamlines Java Tech Based Application Delivery

Press release from the issuing company

2001 JavaOne Developers Conference-San Francisco, California -June 4, 2001-Macromedia, Inc. (NASDAQ: MACR) today announced the availability of Macromedia JRun Server 3.1, the latest version of one of the industry's most approachable Java technology based application servers. With Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) compatibility and new productivity features, JRun 3.1 is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to build and deploy enterprise applications. Macromedia JRun Server 3.1, added to the Macromedia product family after its recent merger with Allaire, is the first release of JRun that is officially J2EE platform compatible, making the advanced capabilities of the J2EE platform more broadly accessible to the entire Java technology development community. JRun 3.1 also includes new features specifically designed to streamline the Java technology based application development process and improve the overall productivity of its users, including JRun Server Tags for simplified code reuse, dynamic deployment of Web applications to increase server uptime, and an enhanced out-of-box experience to get developers up and running as fast as possible. "The release of Macromedia JRun 3.1 reinforces our commitment to Java technology development and open Internet standards," said Dan Murphy, senior product marketing manager, Macromedia. "With J2EE platform compatibility, users can take advantage of maximum portability with application components for J2EE compatible application servers and full compatibility across multiple platforms. JRun 3.1 contains the features that developers have requested to speed time-to-market and increase return on investment." "Sun's goal is to provide Web developers with the standards based technologies they require to rapidly build applications for the Java platform and the Solaris Operating Environment," said Rick Saletta J2EE Product Group Marketing Manager at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Macromedia's JRun 3.1 solution leverages the flexibility of the J2EE platform to help developers simplify development and accelerate time to market of their applications." Through new productivity enhancements, JRun 3.1 strives to provide developers with the most approachable Java technology based application server on the market. For example, JRun Server Tags (JST) allows developers to easily reuse JavaServer Pages (JSP) code by building custom tags using JSP syntax rather than the Java technology based customer tag handler API. The server also enables developers to automatically redeploy Web Application Archive (WAR) files, web.xml settings, JavaBeans components, servlets and taglib files, significantly increasing uptime and reducing the hassle involved with updating Web applications because the server no longer needs to be restarted after changing the application settings. JRun 3.1 also offers enhanced documentation and sample applications outlining the functionality and modifications of JRun 3.1, enabling new users to easily get started using JRun and advanced users to gain a deeper understanding of the product. Existing customers of JRun 3.0 are eligible to receive an upgrade to JRun 3.1 at no additional cost, and for new users, the price point for JRun 3.1 remains unchanged from JRun 3.0 at $795 per CPU for Professional Edition, $1995 per CPU for Advanced Edition, and $4995 per CPU for Enterprise Edition. New users can now leverage the features of a fully J2EE compatible application server at the lowest price point in the industry.
