Pittsburgh, Pa., May 15, 2001 - Donald M. Duncanson, president of Dynacolor Graphics, Inc. in Miami, Florida, has been named Sheetfed Executive of the Year by the National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL) and the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF). The award was created by GATF and NAPL to honor a sheetfed industry leader who has demonstrated exceptional service, initiative, and commitment to his or her community, company, and the sheetfed printing industry. The award will be presented by George Ryan, GATF president, and I. Gregg Van Wert, NAPL president, during a special Sheetfed Executive of the Year luncheon on Tuesday, May 22. Over 375 people are expected to attend the luncheon as part of the ninth annual GATF/NAPL Sheetfed Pressroom Conference held May 2022, 2001, at the Marriott O'Hare Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. Nominator James Hyder, Jr., president of Fetter Printing Company in Louisville, Kentucky wrote, "Don worked his way up through the business." Mr. Duncanson started in the industry as a bindery helper for a nine-person printing company. During his 10 years at this company, he assumed positions as a platemaker, cameraman, color separator, dot etcher, and department supervisor. Eventually he was vice president of manufacturing and part owner of this company that had grown to 150 people and an 86,000 square foot manufacturing plant. In 1971, Mr. Duncanson founded Dynacolor, which currently employs 74 people at a 41,000 square foot plant. The company specializes in post cards, brochures, and catalog sheets that are sold nationwide, as well as short-run publications and commercial printing that is sold locally. Under Mr. Duncanson's direction, Dynacolor has been a consistent winner of the NAPL Management Plus Award, which measures the quality of a company's management and all other aspects of the organization (one Gold level and six Silver level awards), and is a member of NAPL's Management Plus Society. In addition the company won many printing contest awards from the Printing Association of Florida and the Printing Industry of South Florida. For its community involvement it has won the Printing Industry of South Florida's Volunteer Company of the Year award and the Printing Association of Florida's Spirit of Humanity award. The company was awarded the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce's Personnel and Labor Management Innovation and Excellence award and the Professional Photographers of America's Director's award. "He has a strong record for supporting education for the industry," wrote last year's winner James R. Schultz, chairman, president, and CEO of Great Lakes Companies in Cleveland, Ohio, and another of Mr. Duncanson's nominators. "Dynacolor offers in-house training and employee-driven quality programs. Additionally, he was a past board member for the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF) and the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC)." As a member of several trade and professional organizations, his motivation and direction has benefited the industry. Mr. Duncanson has served as a member of the NAPL Board of Directors since 1985. He is a past chairman of NAPL and continues to serve on various committees. He is a recipient of NAPL's Soderstrom award and is a member of the Soderstrom Society. He graduated from NAPL's Management Institute's Business Planning and Financial Management courses. He served on the Printing Association of Florida (PAF) and the Printing Industry of South Florida's (PISF) boards for 25 years serving as chairman of PISF in 1973, 1983, 1984, and chairman of PAF in 1993. During this time he served as the trade show chairman for the Graphics of the Americas show in Miami and the Graphics of the Future show in Orlando and is currently serving on their Education and Program committees. In 1998 he was awarded PAF's Graphic Arts Leader of the Americas award. Mr. Duncanson is equally dedicated to local and charitable causes. His past community involvement included thirteen years of coaching boys' baseball and girls' softball in Hollywood Hills. He is a member of St. Maurice Catholic Church and participates in the YMCA in Hollywood, Florida where he and his wife of 42 years raised five children.
