Lexar Media Launches Portable USB Memory Stick Reader

Press release from the issuing company

DPIX, Chicago, IL., May 18, 2001 -- Lexar Media, Inc. (NSDQ: LEXR), a leading designer, developer and marketer of high-performance digital film and connectivity products for the digital photography market, today unveiled its new USB Memory Stick™ Reader at DPIX in Chicago. Priced at $59.99, the reader will be available in June from camera dealers, consumer electronics retailers and distributors, in addition to the Lexar Media Web site at www.digitalfilm.com. “The Memory Stick format has shown impressive growth with business and consumer audiences seeking to expand their portable devices’ usefulness,” said John Reimer, president and CEO of Lexar Media. “Besides Sony, Lexar Media is the only company presently branding and offering Memory Stick, so we see a tremendous opportunity in introducing complementary products such as the new Lexar Media USB Memory Stick Reader.” NPD Intellect Market Tracking, a leading provider of sales tracking data for consumer electronics, imaging and computer hardware, notes that retail channel sales for Memory Stick have been growing at a brisk rate, starting with five percent market share at the end of 1999 and rising to 29 percent by the end of 2000. NPD Intelect further reports that a healthy sales increase for digital cameras, PDAs and MP3s has been noted as product functionality increases and devices become more mainstream.  “With the addition of the USB Memory Stick Reader, Lexar Media continues to serve its customers who use Memory Stick for digital photography, plus a growing audience that seeks high-quality storage options for portable communications devices,” said Doug Kellam, Lexar Media’s vice president of marketing. “Our aggressively priced reader makes file transport between Memory Stick-based devices quick and easy. Consumers who store many image and text files, plus large music files will spend less time uploading and downloading. They can also avoid the hassle of draining the batteries on their camera or other devices during downloads.” The new Lexar Media USB Memory Stick Reader offers portability and connection to PC or Macintosh through the USB port on the computer. Lexar Media’s complete line of Memory Stick products includes 16MB, 32MB and 64MB capacities, plus the new Memory Stick Reader.
