Press release from the issuing company

BOSTON -- April 16, 2001 -- At Seybold Seminars Boston 2001, the Tom McMillan Foundation presented its 3rd Annual Tom McMillan Award for Editorial Excellence to Earl Wilken, industry journalist and former Associate Editor of Graphic Arts Monthly. Wilken, who brings over 35 years of editorial experience to the graphic arts industry, was voted to receive the award by public relations professionals serving the graphic arts community. Wilken served 17 years as a Technical Editor for Editor & Publisher magazine prior to his 18 years as Associate Editor for Graphic Arts Monthly. Prior to that, he worked for several years with publications including Research & Development Magazine and Datamation. He also served for 15 years on the Advisory Board for The Center for Graphic Communications Management and Technology at New York University. "Earl has always been the consummate editorial professional and serves as an example to others," says Tom McMillan Foundation co-founder, public relations consultant Craig Kevghas. "Many industry public relations professionals have grown not only to appreciate him as a journalist, but as a friend and colleague as well. He's a credit to his profession in every sense." The Tom McMillan Foundation was formed in 1999 to support the former Editor in Chief of Electronic Publishing magazine in his fight against ALS. For more than 15 years McMillan served the graphic arts industry as a writer and magazine editor specializing in electronic publishing and computer graphics technology. McMillan was diagnosed early in 1998 with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, which he fought until his death the following year at age 47. In addition to the awards ceremony, the Foundation funds an industry scholarship, established with the help of the Print & Graphics Scholarship Foundation (a division of GATF) to aid students pursuing a career in the graphic arts.
