Study Says Multiple Ebook Formats Hatch Confusion

Press release from the issuing company

4/10/01 - According to TrendWatch, nearly two thirds (61%) of publishers cite the perennial "keeping up with technological changes" as a business challenge. And this spikes among eBook publishers -- 76% of them are challenged by technological issues. It's not hard to figure out why: eBook publishers are being pelted with many competing formats and few standards. Imagine how hard it is to develop for an emerging medium that has many competing formats. There are four "top-level" eBook formats currently on the market, along with a slew of other niche formats. And on the other side of the content fence, imagine trying to figure out which format you want to embrace (that's our fancy word for "invest in") from a user standpoint...or a developer standpoint. No one knows which one will take off, or if even any of them will. At the moment, publishers are putting their eBook eggs in a variety of baskets...and hoping they don't end up with it on their faces.
