Press release from the issuing company

CHICAGO, April 2, 2001 -- R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company (NYSE: DNY) has named Victoria Shire, 46, senior vice president of corporate communication. Prior to joining the company, she had been a managing director in the change communications specialty group for Burson-Marsteller, based in Chicago. "Vicky brings many experiences and insights in communications and marketing to R.R. Donnelley," said William L. Davis, chairman, president and chief executive officer of R.R. Donnelley. "She is the right person for a crucial job within our company as we lead the revolution in communications effectiveness by helping customers repackage their content to develop new markets, new audiences and new revenue sources." Shire brings more than 24 years of experience to R.R. Donnelley. While at Burson-Marsteller's Chicago office, she worked with Fortune 500 companies in planning and executing major change initiatives to help them gain a competitive edge. Prior to Burson-Marsteller, Shire had spearheaded the communications and marketing efforts for Nicor Inc. She successfully helped to reposition the company to prepare it for increased competition in a new deregulated energy world. With a more strategic approach to communications, Shire also helped redefine the company's operations to better reflect its brand promise and value to its customers. "Corporate leaders continually need to reinvent themselves to sustain their leadership position," said Shire. "R.R. Donnelley's augmentation of its traditional print services with integrated communication solutions is just what our customers are asking for. I'm excited to become a part of this team, which is very passionate about connecting people through the power of words and images."
