(February 28, 2001)- WAM!NET Global Healthcare, a subsidiary of global information technology services provider, WAM!NET, Inc., today announced that it has been selected by (Digital Imaging Acquisition Networking Associates) -DIANAssociates, Incorporated, a systems integrator and telemedicine provider to the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) -- to provide additional network connectivity between the University of Maryland Medical Center and six more INS Service Processing Centers (SPC)s. An SPC is a facility where undocumented immigrants await the completion of their immigration processes. During a typical stay, a rigorous health screening is completed to identify those with infectious disease and prevent the spread of diseases, such as tuberculosis, while inside the United States. Airborne infectious diseases are those that can be spread through the air from one person to another. Health screenings can quickly identify and treat persons with infectious disease, and stop the spread of these diseases among the American public. DIANAssociates uses the WAM!NET® network to send digital chest images, which typically are 10 megabytes in size, from service processing centers to the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, where they are screened for infectious chest-related diseases, including tuberculosis. DIANAssociates, who has been successfully using WAM!NET services for connectivity to the INS Port Isabel, Texas processing center since 1999, will expand its usage to connect processing centers in El Paso, Texas; Florence, Arizona; San Pedro and El Centro, California, Miami and New York City. In using WAM!NET network services, DIANAssociates can return a diagnostic reading to the INS processing centers in less than four hours, identifying infectious diseases 25 times faster than before and improving immigrant care.
