Domtar Launches New Web Application for the Public Use

Press release from the issuing company

Montreal, February 5, 2001 - Domtar Inc. announced today the launch of a powerful new interactive web based application, which will enable the public at large to review and comment on Domtar's forest management operations in the Province of Ontario. Aboriginal communities as well as stakeholders, such as recreational forest-users and outfitters will also be able to participate in the development of new forest management plans through the Web. "Domtar firmly believes that it is in fact possible to satisfy the public concerns, reconcile the interests of other forest users, while maintaining and enhancing its competitive position worldwide. In our view, public confidence in forest management, along with maintaining open dialogue with all stakeholders, safeguards our access to the forest and our future as a pulp, paper and forest products company", said Craig McManus, Senior Vice-President, Forest Resource Division. This new service builds on the resounding success of a pilot project that was launched last November in the Northern region of the Province of Quebec. Before the end of the current year, Domtar will have all of its North American forestry operations on the Web. This initiative dovetails with Domtar's commitment to have its forestry practices certified to ISO 14001 standards before the end of 2002. In addition to requiring independent third party verification, ISO 14001 calls for ongoing public consultation. This new application, a first in the industry, uses the Internet application known as ArcIMS (Internet Map Server), which allows users to interactively consult forest operations under the responsibility of Domtar's Forest Resource Division. This application permits users to personalize maps used by Domtar and to view them according to various themes: harvest planning, planting and thinning activities, logging roads, land uses, trapping areas, etc.
