Macromedia Celebrates Fifth Year of Shockwave, Claims 165 Million Users

Press release from the issuing company

San Francisco, California -Macromedia, Inc. (NASDAQ: MACR) today is celebrating five years of amazing Shockwave content on the Web. Macromedia Shockwave Player brings rich media playback to more than 165 million Web users. Macromedia Director developers have pushed Shockwave content to incredible heights in its first five years, and Macromedia is excited to see what the developer community will deliver in the future. "Macromedia wants to thank the developers who have made Shockwave content the phenomenon that it is today. Higher bandwidth, multiuser content, and new media types will enable our developers to create even more magnetic experiences," said Peter Ryce, senior director of product marketing for Macromedia. "We look forward to working with developers on the next generation of great Shockwave content." Shockwave content uniquely combines video, animation, sound, and photo realistic images with sophisticated interactivity to enable compelling Web experiences. New sites from The Beatles and Milko push the boundaries of Shockwave content and set an example for developers worldwide. Milko, one of Sweden's largest dairy companies, uses Shockwave content to deliver the "Milko Music Machine," whereby Web visitors can dress up a cow, mix a music track, teach the cow some dance moves, and then watch the finished music video they have assembled. Companies such as Timex, Disney, Fox Interactive, and ExploreScience use Shockwave content to differentiate themselves online while providing a richer, interactive user experience. The Shockwave Player also provides an extensible delivery platform that enables third-party developers such as Beatnik and 3D Groove to add functionality to the player at run time. More than 165 million people already have the player installed, ensuring they are ready for the ride.
