WhatTheyThink’s Going Green has joined forces with Two Sides to help address the “perceptions” that paper destroys forests, that electronic media are “greener” than print and paper, and that recycling is the solution to all environmental ills. Two Sides UK, in its posting of the FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment 2010, writes, “Two Sides has estimated that only 11% of the total worldwide forest cut is used directly for making paper.” There are, of course. some regional differences, but that is the overall average. Why Should You Care? What is the primary use of removed forest? Fuel. “At the global level, woodfuel accounted for about half of the removed wood,” says the report. This is especially the case in Asia and Africa. So even if we stopped using paper entirely, we would barely make a dent in the amount of wood that is harvested from forests. Of course, as I write this, the wind from Sandy is starting to whip up quite substantially, so there may not be too many trees left standing by the end of the day.
