WhatTheyThink’s Going Green has joined forces with Two Sides to help address the “perceptions” that paper destroys forests, that electronic media are “greener” than print and paper, and that recycling is the solution to all environmental ills. We have spoken of ecoEnvelopes (that is, a single envelope that can be used for two-directional mail) before—Sprint notably began developing and using them earlier this year—and now Florida Garden Magazine has been using them for subscription renewals. Via PrintMediaCentr, “Gale Ward of ecoEnvelopes says the simple switch from using two envelopes in a mailing to one can have huge cost savings for a business. Savings typically range from 15–50% over the cost of two envelopes.” Why should you care? What is the number one reason that companies are reducing their use of print in favor of electronic media? (No, it’s not to save trees.) It’s to save costs, which is certainly understandable. (Although given how much unwanted stuff ends up in my inbox I sometimes wish there were costs associated with sending e-mail.) So any new paper- and print-based innovation that can help reduce costs can help spur the further use of print.
